But it wouldn’t be complete without our deep dive into the best soundtracks and scores of the 2010s. It’s admittedly somewhat weird and difficult to do. Scores and soundtracks are different beasts; one original musical written for a film that gives it its emotional shape—often the secret MVP of a movie—and the other more of a mixtape, but when well-curated and used next to picture, can be just as deadly and help craft what we know as the visual and aural transcendence that’s known as cinema when it’s at its best.

Everyone’s ornery as we sprint to make those deadlines, but before we declare war on one another, remember we still have inspiring and movie music to celebrate and soothe us. In crafting this piece over the years – Best Soundtracks and Scores – we’ve discovered it’s one of the most soothing, one of the best balms of the end of the year.

Will the ‘Avengers 4’ trailer arrive on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday? Oops, it’s changed, sorry, it’s not arriving til Monday. First the trailer usurped the movie itself, and now the date of the trailer has usurped the trailer itself, which is of course just a commercial trying to convince you to see a movie which in some case is a piece of art and other times is a commercial for a larger film, bigger universe or next installment of what the studio really wants you to see.

Universal’s “Halloween” did drop 58% in its second week, but that’s not unheard of for horror, and the David Gordon Green-directed film still raked in another $32 million. This 2018 “Halloween” movie is already the highest grossing film of the series both domestically and worldwide and will soon even beat the original 1978 John Carpenter version when adjusted for inflation.

According to estimates, “Halloween” debuted at #1, quite easily, with a massive $77.5 million in its first frame. To say this is a big opening is a complete understatement.

The actor, like many of the Judd Apatow brat pack bunch, tuned the acclaim of those early comedies “Superbad,” “Get Him To The Greek”) into personal success outside of that sphere. But, Hill, who now has two Oscar nominations to his credit (“Moneyball,” “The Wolf Of Wall Street”) and two Golden Globes (“Moneyball” and “War Dogs”) has exceeded all expectations, eclipsed his pals.

The film, which centers on a young boy who finds himself joining a group of skateboarders, is being compared to seminal films like “Kids.” In a recent interview with Collider, Hill discusses how his first time behind the camera became about telling the story of a 12-year-old skater. Apparently, we have Spike Jonze to thank.

We don’t see why, but it’s not hard to guess; a short time later, Ian’s parting instructions to stay out of his room are immediately ignored by his little brother, and Hill’s opening credit sequence finds the 13-year-old kid all but worshipping the sacred objects within — jerseys, magazines, weights, cassette tape, and CDs.

So, our fall preview essentially doubles for both, a few films here and there missing due to lack of release dates yet. But yes, the Venice Film Festival starts this week, the Telluride Film Festival this weekend and following that a brief reprieve before the Toronto International Film Festival and then the genre-focused Fantastic Fest in Austin and artsy and prestigious New York Film Festival in late September and early October.

The filming techniques, the use of mostly unknown actors, and the subject matter harken back to something like “Kids,” and less like the highly-polished films the actor is known for starring in. And adding to this distinct vision is Hill’s choice of composers for “mid90s” — Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
