Netflix is developing a live-action film based on the “BioShock” video game franchise. A previous incarnation had been a passion project for filmmaker Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of The Caribbean“) but eventually dissolved before this latest version of the film surfaced. The streaming service has found its writer and director for the sci-fi horror mash-up project.

It’s been revealed by Deadline that Francis Lawrence has been hired to direct “BioShock” with Michael Green (“Logan,” “Blade Runner 2049“) tasked to pen the script.

To say there’s behind-the-scenes drama during the production of Season 2 of “American Gods” seems to be a gross understatement. After a successful first season on Starz, the series, based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, looked to be in good hands coming into its sophomore outing. However, after showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green had written six scripts for Season2, they were unceremoniously fired from the series and replaced by Jesse Alexander.

Nope, it’s not superhero numbers, but evidently, 20th Century Fox has deemed the figure for the $55 million movie good enough to start working on a sequel.

The decades long journey to bring “Blade Runner 2049” to the big screen has resulted in many paths not taken, and detours, like 1998’s unofficial side-quel “Soldier” (which apparently takes place in the “Blade Runner” universe). As such, it means there are many plot elements that got left behind, and even Hampton Fancher‘s original treatment for ‘BR2049’ had a different ending to the one Michael Green eventually penned in the screenplay.

It took seventeen years, but “Logan” finally gave fans the Wolverine movie of their dreams, and they rewarded the effort by turning it into a monster hit. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that part of the big reason it succeeds is that it strips the superhero movie down its bare essentials, and leans on character just as much as it does spectacle. More, director James Mangold and his team created a singular effort that doesn’t have to narratively tie into anything that comes before or after, giving them greater storytelling freedom.
