A previous incarnation had been a passion project for filmmaker Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of The Caribbean“) but eventually dissolved before this latest version of the film surfaced. The streaming service has found its writer and director for the sci-fi horror mash-up project.

It’s been revealed by Deadline that Francis Lawrence has been hired to direct “BioShock” with Michael Green (“Logan,” “Blade Runner 2049“) tasked to pen the script.

After various starts and stops over the course of its years-long development (first as a movie franchise, now as a series), it appears that “Y” might be on its last legs.

After a successful first season on Starz, the series, based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, looked to be in good hands coming into its sophomore outing. However, after showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green had written six scripts for Season2, they were unceremoniously fired from the series and replaced by Jesse Alexander.

Actually, a couple The Playlist staffers are also secret/not-so-secret fans of the famed mystery writer. At any rate, she’s enjoying a renaissance thanks to “Murder On The Orient Express,” which has quietly circled the globe to the tune of $148 million and counting. Nope, it’s not superhero numbers, but evidently, 20th Century Fox has deemed the figure for the $55 million movie good enough to start working on a sequel.

As such, it means there are many plot elements that got left behind, and even Hampton Fancher‘s original treatment for ‘BR2049’ had a different ending to the one Michael Green eventually penned in the screenplay.

No matter how the box office figures eventually pan out, much will be discussed about “Blade Runner 2049” in the years to come. Packed with ideas about the future, creation, our relationship to digital technology and more, Denis Villeneuve and his team crafted a thoughtful followup to Ridley Scott‘s acclaimed, original movie. On top of that, the filmmakers crafted a new story, one that links to the past, while also building a possible future.

It took seventeen years, but “Logan” finally gave fans the Wolverine movie of their dreams, and they rewarded the effort by turning it into a monster hit. If you’ve seen the movie, you know that part of the big reason it succeeds is that it strips the superhero movie down its bare essentials, and leans on character just as much as it does spectacle. More, director James Mangold and his team created a singular effort that doesn’t have to narratively tie into anything that comes before or after, giving them greater storytelling freedom.

As far as anyone knows, no new mutants have been born in the last twenty-five years, and the legend of the X-Men have been left to the pages of comic books. Always a perpetual loner, James Howlett aka Logan aka Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), has even further isolated himself, living off the grid in a remote industrial warehouse, where he cares for Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), the once great Professor X, who is now battling dementia and diminished control of his still fearsome powers.

After their first attempt to bring the franchise to the big screen fizzled out, 20th Century Fox is going to give their superhero quartet The Fantastic Four another shot at box office glory in the tentatively titled “Fantastic Four Reborn.” Details have been quiet on the project so far, but Screen Rant (via Collider) are reporting a couple of intriguing pieces of info that have come to them from a source at Fox’s SFX department.

Harry Knowles at AICN has apparently gotten a whiff of the potential titles for two of Fox’s biggest upcoming franchise films. If you’re excited for more John McClane and The Thing then today is your day as “Die Hard 24/7” and “Fantastic Four Reborn” are rumored to be the titles (or perhaps the working titles) for the next installments.

Harry, always chatty with the talent, surmises that Bruce’s experiences on the testosterone heavy set of “The Expendables” have led to him taking his action franchise in a different direction, to “get it right” after the last installment.

Oh good lord. On the brink of Disney’s buyout of Marvel, 20th Century Fox has now hired producer Akiva Goldsman, infamously renowned for his deplorable “Batman & Robin” script, to lead a reboot of the “Fantastic Four.”

The franchise saw two films this decade, both helmed by Tim Story and starring the quartet of Ioan Grufford, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis. Despite being slammed by critics alike though, the films still managed to gross over $600 million worldwide which is likely to be part of reason why a reboot is now being sanctioned, cause quality isn’t part of the picture.
