The filmmaker’s work is built upon the looming expectation of violent transgression, society standing flimsy atop the fragile idea of cordiality. Such benevolence, sustained by the centuries-old notion of polite society, is easier to break within the intimate confines of the family home, a sentiment Franco explores to the very limits of shock and emotional obliteration within his body of work.

Across its eight episodes, a trophy wife lives on a shelf, an ignored woman disappears, and a frustrated wife returns her husband to a big box store. Its short fables are so on the nose that, were the words of this review somehow incorporated into one of the episode’s scripts, viewers would likely see a woman with the show’s title balanced just above her nostrils.

He/she/they is perhaps only just one text message away and perhaps just one step away from daring you to jump off the cliff of normalcy into blissful self-destruction. So the longing romantic fantasy of what if?, underscored by the underpinnings of life’s routines and inherent romantic dissatisfactions, is explored with scintillating, flirty, flinty pleasure in HBO’s romantic comedy cum thriller mini-series, “Run.” From creator Vicky Jones, a frequent collaborator of “Fleabag” creator and star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, also an executive producer and guest star in the series, and starring Merritt Wever (“Unbelievable,” “Godless”) and Domhnall Gleeson (“Ex Machina,” “Rise Of Skywalker”), ”Run” has all the trappings of a terrifically entertaining series about secret romantic pacts, unfulfilled desire, star crossed destinies, and perhaps the manic thrill of blowing up your life all in the name of a sensual romp between two people with electric chemistry.

Y’know, something along the lines of, “If we’re not married by 35, we’ll marry each other.” In the new series, “Run,” that idea of a relationship pact is taken to the next level.

For this series, however, a text-based twist gives her the push to somehow move. Of course, it just happens to be a guy from her past behind the message.

The details of these—from the mysterious fire poker of “The Staircase” fame to the shocking abuse of police power in “Making a Murderer” —have made amateur sleuths of us all. The streaming platform hasn’t quite spanned the entire gamut of crimes as yet, but the latest addition to its whodunit shelf is a step in the right direction.

Today, that series is “Unbelievable.”

As seen in the trailer for “Unbelievable,” the crime thriller follows the story of two female cops on the case of a serial rapist that leaves no evidence. The problem that these investigators find is that because there is no evidence, the women that are coming forward aren’t being believed by local law enforcement.

But on the whole, the two things go hand in hand: it’s impossible to imagine “Lawrence Of Arabia” without Peter O’Toole, “Star Wars” without Harrison Ford, “Cabaret” without Liza Minnelli, or “Tokyo Story” without Chishu Ryu and Chieko Higashiyama, to name but a few.
