What does it take to launch a media company in 2020? Better yet, what does it take to launch a media company that is attempting to create a new type of content in the crowded streaming environment? Lots of money, clearly. And probably, incredible leadership. At least, that’s what you hope for. In the case of Quibi, the money was never a question (the start-up streaming platform raised more than $1.75 billion), but some have begun to wonder if the leadership is up to the task of making “quick bite” content work.

Not every entry into the Streaming Wars is going to be a major player. In a field dominated by titans like Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu, it takes a lot to be an immediate contender. Basically, Disney+ and HBO Max are only in the conversation because of the mega-corporations and massive libraries they bring. Quibi, on the other hand, needed to build everything from scratch, and so far, hasn’t made the massive impact that some would have hoped for, especially considering the huge investments the company received before launching.

It’s common knowledge that the April launch of Quibi didn’t go as well as the company had hoped. On iTunes, the app isn’t even amongst the top 50. Needless to say, for a new company that has gained more than $1 billion in funding, this type of mediocre launch amidst a crowded streaming playing field is not ideal.
