Her newest project, “Maya” – a quiet, melancholic meditation exploring a journalist’s capacity for care after experiencing a major trauma – is currently still seeking US distribution, and in an illuminating interview, published by Indiewire, the filmmaker concedes that she’s only willing to compromise her creative process up to a point, and her new movie may not be released in America, it’s still up in the air.

We cover film and our best of year-end lists cover every single possible angle of film and TV. And yes, we’re oh so tired and we hope this doesn’t feel too perfunctory. Look, we’ve covered, as suggested, every stripe of 2018 movie and TV coverage performances, new directors, breakout actors and actresses, documentaries, all kinds of new exciting talents and each year we say to ourselves, “eh, let’s dial this back, it’s too much, no one cares that much do they?” And each year we find ourselves going, “Oooh, ooh, oooh!

She’s a storyteller, to be sure, but less prone to tell those stories with conventional plotting than with moments, moods, and unexpected through-lines. Her best works – “Goodbye First Love,” “Eden,” and especially 2016’s “Things to Come” – tend to sneak up on you, meandering through scenes of offhand character study and chance interaction, before snapping fully into focus in their closing scenes.

Lord knows we need things to keep us going in the shitshow that has been the second half of the 2010s, and fortunately, cinema has provided.

After a slow start, 2017 turned out to be a pretty great year for movies, and 2018 looks to keep that up in a big way.

Coming off “Eden” which delved into the French electronic music scene of the 1990s, she launched right into “Things To Come” starring Isabelle Huppert, about a woman dealing with a series of late life crises, which premiered earlier this year at the Berlin Film Festival, and will be released in the U.S.
