Skateboarding on the cinematic spectrum of punk to mainstream, Danish filmmaker Thomas Vinterberg no longer wears ripped jeans. Once the co-conspirator behind the Dogme 95 manifesto with Lars Von Trier — a raw, minimalist, limitations-driven punk-cinema movement ala the early White Stripes rules of only 2 instruments to find pureness —Vinterberg put away his DIY, impish, abrasive tendencies long ago in favor of something more refined. He’s continued with resonant art films (the magnificent “The Hunt”), but has evolved and matured too, taking on more mainstream work like 2015’s romantic drama “Far From The Madding Crowd.

The series has consistently added new blood into the mix as a way of keeping things fresh, with Dwayne Johnson, Kurt Russell and Jason Statham among the big-ticket additions to the series, but the upcoming movie comes with something of a credibility boost, with not one but two Oscar-winning actresses getting in on the fun, in the shape of Charlize Theron and Helen Mirren.

First Look At Rooney Mara As Lisbeth Salander In ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’

It’s only been a few weeks since the epic search for an actress to play the already-iconic role of Lisbeth Salander in David Fincher’s version of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” was completed. And of course, relative unknown and “The Social Network” star Rooney Mara beat out the likes of Ellen Page, Emily Browning and Lea Seydoux to the part.

Filming kicks off in Sweden later in the month, with Mara joining Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard and Max Von Sydow in the thriller, the first of a mooted trilogy, but pictures of Mara as she’ll appear in the film have already appeared, after Rooney Mara Network (via Oh No They Didn’t) picked up a few paparazzi images of the actress.

Max Von Sydow In Talks To Join David Fincher’s ‘The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’ As Henrik Vanger

With Rooney Mara’s casting yesterday as the titular cyberpunk sleuth Lisabeth Salander, the pieces look to be coming together for David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.”

The film will see Daniel Craig star as journalist Michael Blomkvist; Robin Wright as love interest Erika Berger while Stellan Skarsgaard is in line to play Martin Vanger, president of Vanger Corporations. Word had it that Fincher would be utilizing Swedish accents for his film (Ellen Page had reportedly been asked to practice one) so it should come as no surprise that more native talent would be coming on board.

Early ‘Robin Hood’ Reviews Are In: Not Quite A Bullseye

With “Iron Man 2” kicking off the summer movie season last Friday, we’re now only a few days from the next blockbuster: Ridley Scott’s new version of “Robin Hood.” It opens the Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday, but the film’s been screening for a few weeks, and the first reviews have turned up overnight. In terms of the previous collaborations between Scott and Russell Crowe, it hasn’t picked up the vitriolic reviews of “A Good Year,” but it ain’t “Gladiator” either, it seems.

“The story that we’re looking at is: where does this guy Robin come from?,” Russell Crowe asks in a new featurette for the upcoming Ridley Scott action/adventure picture, “Robin Hood” that stars Cate Blanchett and a host of other estimable actors such as William Hurt, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Lea Seydoux, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand, Alan Doyle, Danny Huston and Max von Sydow.
The featurette also reveals a ton of new footage from the film for those that can’t wait til early May.

Review: ‘Shutter Island’ Is Martin Scorsese’s A-Grade B-Movie

Sometimes it’s about the company you keep. And it’s saying something that right before our screening of “Shutter Island,” Martin Scorsese’s long-delayed and longer-still-anticipated period thriller, Tony Timpone, editor of Fangoria Magazine, sat down in front of us. Because, when you get right down to it, for all its dreamy fantasy sequences, metaphysic mysteries and curlicue conspiracy theories, “Shutter Island” is Scorsese at his most lovingly genre-obsessed. It’s basically a balls-to-the-walls horror movie, made by a master filmmaker and historian (who also has a lifetime subscription to Fangoria Magazine).

New Ridley Scott ‘Robin Hood’ Trailer & Image

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood” starring Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett has come online via Apple Trailers and has been pulled down by ComingSoon. A new image has leaked as well.

As previously mentioned it looks like Scott decided to stay with the simple “Robin Hood” title (though at one point the film was untitled).

There’s a pretty stellar cast involved, William Hurt, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Lea Seydoux, Scott Grimes, Kevin Durand, Alan Doyle, Danny Huston and Max von Sydow, but let’s hope this is more successful that Scott’s last swords and sandals type period-piece epic, “Kingdom of Heaven” (and don’t say the director’s cut was better, it just made it more of a total snooze).

We haven’t really heard much from Ridley Scott’s “Robin Hood,” but were prompted to check in when we saw this new set photo with Russell Crowe and some extras in EW that no one seemed to take notice of (don’t think they ever came online).

And honestly, there’s not that much new out there in detail, but we did find several new set photos, videos and quotes.

Remember that idea that Robin Hood would also be the Sheriff of Nottingham?

Scorsese’s ‘Shutter Island’ Bumped To February 2010

If you read the script for “Shutter Island,” by Laeta Kalogridis which starts out awesome and then…. well follows the book and then ends up being a little silly… you could easily tell that it was going to be a Marty Scorsese B-movie, or lesser work like, “Bringing Out The Dead.”

Still, some insisted on keeping the picture and it’s actors in their Oscar bubble predictions, to which we thought, “no friggin’ way.”

And it seems our posit was right.

The trailer to Marty Scorsese’s “Shutter Island,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo and Michelle Williams is online at Apple trailers. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, the story centers on a pair of 1950s era Federal Marshalls sent to an island that houses a bunker-like mental hospital for the criminally insane to retrieve an escaped and highly dangerous mental patient (played by Emily Mortimer). But all is not what it seems on the creepy island run by two odd and cold doctors played by by the great Max Von Sydow (of every great Ingmar Bergman film) and Ben Kingsley.

Finally, here’s your official first real (not snapped by paparazzi) look at Leonardo DiCaprio and Michelle Williams in Martin Scorsese’s “Ashecliffe” “Shutter Island.”

The film, follows U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels (DiCaprio) and his partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo) on their search for an escaped patient from the Shutter Island mental institution. Williams plays DiCaprio’s wife in the picture who shows up in many a realistic-looking dream sequence. Here’s our thoughts on the script, but it’s one where you can’t say too much without spoiling the entire thing.

‘Shutter Island’s Dream Sequences To Be Highly Realistic

RopeofSilicon has posted a set diary from Martin Scorsese’s upcoming psychological thriller, “Shutter Island” that comes scanned from the French Cahiers Du Cinema publication. Argentinean filmmaker Celine Murga was lucky enough to be on set the whole time and observe the entire shoot as she was part of the 2008 Rolex Mentor and Protege Arts Initiative.

As we noted in our brief script review, it’s tough to discuss “Shutter Island,” in any detail or you’ll give away the films central twist and conceit.

We’re on a script-reading frenzy of late and just finished, Martin Scorsese’s ‘Ashecliffe’ “Shutter Island.” “The Departed” director and Leonardo DiCaprio obviously reunited last year in Massachusetts for the filming of the psycho-thriller based on Boston writer Dennis Lehane’s novel, “Shutter Island.”

The Good:
We recently read Laeta Kalogridis’ script and were left troubled. Let’s back up. By the time we got to page 80, we sent a note to The Playlist team strongly urging them to read this thrilling, fast-paced and gripping page turner, it was that good.

Elliott Gould Loves It, But Ingmar Bergman Hated ‘The Touch’

As we mentioned last week, BAM’s retrospective of ’70s icon Elliott Gould finished up this week (entitled “Elliott Gould: Star For An Uptight Age“) and last night we went to go see “The Touch,” the first ever English language film directed by the great Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (the second and last one was the Hollywood attempt, “The Serpent’s Egg,” which many erroneously report as his only English film; he passed away last year at the age of 89;).
