OK, it’s July, and we’re well past the mid-way part of the year, so it’s time for a slightly belated Best TV Shows Of The Year… So Far, piece, and yes, the Emmy announcements just hit, so we’re slightly behind, but you should also check out that nomination list here.

TV in 2024 has had some highs and lows. Some highly anticipated series, like “Sugar” with Colin Farrell, “The Veil” with Elisabeth Moss, and “The Big Cigar” with Andre Holland, underwhelmed not only us but also many critics (not to mention Lucasfilm’s “The Acolyte,” a mixed bag effort).

Here is our Most Anticipated TV Shows & Mini-Series of 2024 (The Strike-Affected Edition!) feature. 2023’s WGA/SAG-AFTRA/AMPTP strikes were essentially the COVID-19 of 2020. While thankfully, they weren’t as physically deadly, the work stoppage did significantly affect many people in the business and their financial stability. What ties them both together more closely is the disruption of content and product. With streamers already cutting back, regressing on the streaming boom thanks to Wall Street’s reevaluation of their worth, and the strikes delaying a lot of shows for an entire year, the #AgeOfTooMuchContent might officially be coming to a close.

One of 2024’s most anticipated TV shows now has a premiere date.  Apple TV+ announced that “Masters Of The Air,” their upcoming mini-series from Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, the same team who produced “Band Of Brothers” and “The Pacific,” will premiere on the streamer on January 26, 2024. Two episodes premiere on that date, with one new episode every Friday through March 15.

Following the WWII drama “Greyhound” and the sci-fi film “Finch,” Tom Hanks, his Playtone production company, and producing partner Gary Goetzman have enjoyed a good relationship with Apple TV+. And now, it looks like all parties are taking that working partnership to the next level. Deadline reports Hanks, Goeztman and Playtone have signed an overall multi-year television deal with the streaming service and, as part of the agreement, will be making a sequel to the aforementioned WWII naval thriller “Greyhound,” which starred Hanks as a commanding officer of the USS Keeling, and was released in 2020.

Every 10 years or so, it seems as if Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg scratch their World War II itch and release a new massively expensive miniseries about the event. First, it was 2001’s “Band of Brothers,” which was followed by 2010’s “The Pacific.” Both miniseries were critically acclaimed, earning Emmy wins and huge viewership. Now, 11 years after “The Pacific,” the duo are putting together their cast for the upcoming successor to those series, “Master of the Air.”
