The Telluride Film Festival is in the rear-view mirror and the Venice Film Festival will finish up this week and that means they’ll both give way to the Toronto International Film Festival, easily the largest film festival in North America, and in terms of sheer size and volume, probably the largest film festival in the world. TIFF usually houses around 300 films or so, and it’s such a wide and varied event, you can curate it to your tastes: you could stick with glossy mainstream picks with stars, indie up-and-comers, Midnight Madness pictures, foreign films, documentaries, experimental films, and shorts if you wish.

The Toronto International Film Festival is, as always, bringing a healthy mix of films to Canada this fall, but there are two biopics worth keeping an eye on.

First up is “I, Tonya” which finds Margot Robbie playing disgraced Olympic figure skater Tonya Harding. Craig Gillespie (“Lars and The Real Girl,” “Fright Night,” “Their Finest Hours”) directs a cast that includes Sebastian Stan as Jeff Gilloly and Caitlin Carver as Nancy Kerrigan.

This morning, the Toronto International Film Festival unwrapped their first wave of titles, and their 2017 lineup is looking very impressive out of the gate.

It’s auteurs and high profile titles left and right, with plenty of dive into. Right at the top of our must-see list is Darren Aronofsky‘s “mother!” starring Jennifer Lawrence, with Scott Cooper‘s “Hostiles” starring Christian Bale, and Sebastian Lelio‘s “Disobedience” high on our list.

It feels like spring is the best time to be a cinema lover: the Oscars and all the attendant politicking and campaigning are in the rear-view mirror and the noisy blockbuster summer has not yet kicked into gear. In this mood of thankfulness, our thoughts tend to turn to Cannes aka Cinephile Christmas in May, as we start to wonder which of our Most Anticipated 2017 titles might show up on the Croisette. So while it’s still a way off, seeing as anticipation is almost as enjoyable as the festival itself, we’re bringing you this early list of the films we hope most will make it into the selection this year.

The Berlin Film Festival kicks off today which means in addition to the dozens of films unspooling, the European Film Market is going strong as the next wave of new movies look to find homes. And part of getting the buzz going is in releasing the first images from new projects, and we’ll watch anything with the immensely talented Elle Fanning.

“Mary Shelley” (formerly known as “A Storm In The Stars“) finds the actress playing “Frankenstein” writer Mary Shelley, in the movie that will track the author’s affair with the poet Percy Bysse Shelley.
