The intriguing question is at the heart of Peter Hedges’ “The Same Storm”; filmed using laptops and iPhones, it serves as a cinematic record of the year’s looming issues. Hedges — who wrote and directed the project — tackles a myriad of topics ranging from a then-new pandemic to an upcoming election. ‘Storm’ also touches upon the fragile human connections its writer expertly tackled in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” ‘Storm’ also offers a chance for the “Pieces of April” and “Dan in Real Life” director to delve deeper into the art’s influence on reality.

And, now months later, theatrical experiences for the 2019-2020 season that opened before the pandemic shut down Broadway will finally be recognized. Even if that means there were some awkward consequences with just 18 eligible productions available.

The Showtime dramedy debuted in an era where each and every new series from a premium cable network was something worth checking out. And though it might have slipped a bit in the final seasons, “Weeds” still holds up as one of the better prestige series to come out of an era where HBO, Showtime, and other networks were still trying to figure things out with original programming.

Having established his indie cred with “Listen Up Philip” and “Queen Of Earth,” director Alex Ross Perry had been eyeing two very different paths concurrently. He was Disney‘s surprising choice to write an upcoming live-action/CGI “Winnie The Pooh” movie, while he also attached himself to write and direct an adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s “The Names.” And while both of those projects are still developing, Perry will move next towards something else entirely, which should see him split the difference with a more starry cast while retaining his distinctive independent voice.

As you might have guessed from our coverage leading up to the film’s release, we were impressed with the trailers for “Red” and were holding out some hope that in a year populated with rag-tag-crew films like “The Losers,” “The A-Team” and “The Expendables” that disappointed, this would be the film that would be late-inning saving grace. Sadly, this is not the case. Based on the DC Comic and directed by Robert Schwentke, “Red” is essentially a more watchable version of “The Expendables” with a better cast, but plagued with the same narrative and tonal problems of Sylvester Stallone’s steroid and testosterone-heavy film.

“The Losers,” “The A-Team” and “The Expendables” (despite its mind boggling success) didn’t do it for us, but it looks like Robert Schwentke’s “Red” will fill the dumb fun action slot and be a welcome break from seriousness of this fall’s awards season.

The international trailer for the Robert Schwentke-directed adaptation of the DC/Wildstorm comic has arrived, and it looks like total, self-deprecating fun. The film follows Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a retired black-ops CIA agent who finds that his former bosses are trying to kill him.

Yeah, we’re as surprised as you are, but we are really digging the vibe of the upcoming adaptation of Warren Ellis’ comic book “Red.”

The film follows Frank Moses (Bruce Willis), a retired black-ops CIA agent who finds that his former bosses are trying to kill him. Scrambling to survive and to protect the woman he loves (Mary Louise-Parker), he reassembles his old team (Helen Mirren, Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, who is at his free-wheeling eccentric best) for the inevitable one last job…

Directed by Robert Schwentke and rounded out by Brian Cox, Karl Urban, Richard Dreyfuss, Ernest Borgnine and Julian McMahon, the film is light on its toes, and seems to manage the balance of comedy and action that similarly themed misfires like “The Losers” and “The A-Team” failed to achieve earlier this year.

Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s drama centered on the obscenity trial Allen Ginsberg faced after the publication of his controversial poem, “Howl” (also the name of the movie), didn’t exactly receive good notices at Sundance 2010 earlier this year and maybe this is why: the trailer (via the AVClub) is an absolute dyslectic and annoying mess.

During his mixed, but positive review of the film, the AV Club’s Nathan Rabin wrote, “It’s…doggedly schizophrenic.

For whatever reason, this year has seen something of a trend in action movies; older action heroes who are betrayed and forced to reunite to get their revenge. We’ve already had “The Losers” and “The A-Team” this year to negligible results, and “The Expendables” looks to continue the theme. A trailer for Robert Schwentke’s “Red” has just come online over at Yahoo, and despite hitting a good six months after the rest of them, it looks like it’s got the potential to be far more enjoyable than any of the others.

Michael Douglas has made a decades-spanning career of playing people that we shouldn’t like in films such as “Wall Street,” “Fatal Attraction,” and “A Perfect Murder.” He never begs for your affection, but he plays roles with such honesty that his characters always feel authentic, even as they’re committing acts we never imagine we’d do and saying things we hope we’d never say. In “Solitary Man,” the titular Ben Kalmen, is another instance of this for the actor, but he’s not merely rehashing previous roles.

Earlier this month, our EIC chatted with filmmaking duo Brian Koppelman & David Levien, the screenwriters of “Rounders,” “Ocean’s Thirteen,” “The Girlfriend Experience” and the directing pair behind the forthcoming Michael Douglas-led ensemble drama “Solitary Man” — the cast is aces, Susan Sarandon, Mary-Louise Parker, Jesse Eisenberg, Imogen Poots, Olivia Thirlby, Jenna Fischer, Danny Devito and many more great character actors.

In their round-about way, the pair told us that they were in-line to write yet another, new iteration of the “Bourne 4” script, but obviously Paul Greengrass quit the franchise and all of it is a moot point now.

Like so many films these days that arrive at festivals, the Michael Douglas and Jesse Eisenberg starring “Solitary Man” (not to be confused with “A Single Man” and “A Serious Man”) debuted at TIFF and then… nothing. Now, nearly five months later, Anchor Bay has sealed a deal and picked up the US rights from Millenium Films for the film.

As we reported last summer, this sounds like an intriguing blend of ingredients.

Sounds great, right?
