Matt Damon Officially Circling Cameron Crowe’s ‘We Bought A Zoo’

We caught about twenty minutes of Cameron Crowe’s “Elizabethtown” on TV recently, for the first time since its release, and were reminded why we’re glad that the writer/director has taken half a decade off to recover from that train wreck. Reports came in earlier in the year that Crowe had signed on to a new project, “We Bought A Zoo,” based on Benjamin Mee’s memoir of how he, along with his young family, purchased a zoo in Britain (as the title might suggest), while his wife was succumbing to a terminal illness.

It’s been five years since Cameron Crowe last directed a film, and many would argue that considering that last film was the disastrous “Elizabethtown,” it can only be a good thing that he’s taking his time over his next project. There was news yesterday that he’s close to starting filming on “We Bought A Zoo,” which may star Ben Stiller and/or Matt Damon, and today’s brought some more casting news on a future Crowe project.

Common Puts Hand Up To Play Marvin Gaye In A Biopic

Rapper-turned-actor Common has slowly found his way into the Hollywood consciousness of late with bit part roles in the likes of “Smokin’ Aces,” “Terminator Salvation,” “Wanted” and “Date Night.” However the all-round entertainer has now revealed greater ambitions for his acting foray: to play motown legend Marvin Gaye in a biopic.

“I hope some people out in Hollywood see I can do more than bad guys, that I start to see material that I can really do something with,” Common tells the Orlando Sentinel.

Cameron Crowe (Still) Working On Marvin Gaye Biopic

Three and a half years ago Cameron Crowe began quietly working on a biopic of the late soul R&B singer Marvin Gaye.

We say quietly because to find any such references from 2007 are nearly impossible and if you look at most movie or music sites or blogs you won’t find nary a mention (yes, including the good ol’ Playlist). Essentially, this has never been widely reported. Interestingly enough, it was mentioned briefly in a August 2009, LATimes article, but no one seemed to pick up on it.

What’s Goin’ On?: Yet Another Marvin Gaye Biopic That’s What – This One With Deeper Music Access

Another Marvin Gaye biopic? Yup. F. Gary Gray, the director behind “The Italian Job” and the stoner comedy, “Friday,” is finally getting his with to direct “Marvin,” from a script written by C. Gaby Mitchell (the guy who wrote “Blood Diamond”).

According to Variety, Gray has long wanted to helm a Gaye biopic, but music rights were always an issue. But now the producers of the film apparently have complete music rights to Gaye’s catalog, including hits like “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” “Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “What’s Goin’ On” and “Let’s Get It On.”

The difference between this doc and the upcoming James Gandolfini produced Gaye flick, “Sexual Healing,” starring Jesse L.

Marvin Gaye Biopic Set To Shoot In April; ‘Law & Order’ Cop To Play Lead, James Gandolfini To Co-Star & Produce

The long-awaited Marvin Gaye biopic starring “Law & Order” star Jesse L. Martin will begin shooting in April according to the Hollywood Reporter.

Titled “Sexual Healing,” the film will focus on the last year of the soul singer’s life and will co-star “Sopranos” actor James Gandolfini as Belgian promoter Freddy Cousaert and he’s also the producer of the film. Relatively untested director Lauren Goodman will helm the project.

Goodman wrote the script and loosely based it on the book, “Trouble Man.” The $15 million dollar production is set for principal photography in April.

Four For Friday – Troubleman, Amateur, Midnight Cowboy, Devil’s Rejects,

It’s that time of the week again: Four For Friday. Four random soundtracks and one song chosen from each (with exceptions of course).

First up was Marvin Gaye’s foray into the world of blaxploitation scoring for the 1972 film, “Troubleman.” Everyone was doing it (Issac Hayes for “Shaft,” Curtis Mayfield for “Superfly,” a then-unknown Earth Wind & Fire performing the director-written music for “Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song” ) so why not get in on the then in-vogue trend (he beat James Brown’s “Black Caesar” score by a year).
