With a career that spanned seven decades, Martin Landau may not have always had the spotlight, but when he did shine, few would forget the impression he made. Sadly, the legendary actor has passed away at the age of 89.

Indeed, Landau made his first notable mark in only his second feature film, Alfred Hitchcock‘s “North By Northwest,” but curiously, it would be difficult to find quality big screen roles.

Woody Allen loves to toy with the ideas of his heroes and contemporaries, and in 1989’s “Crimes and Misdemeanors” he turned to one of the greatest novelists ever to exist, Fyodor Dostoevsky. The author’s finest work (in this author’s humble opinion) and a must-read for any literati or cinephile alike, “Crime and Punishment,” was Allen’s specific inspiration for the film, and provided a backdrop of existential angst and dogmatism.

Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau & Catherine O’Hara Join Voice Cast Of Tim Burton’s ‘Frankenweenie’

Even though it won’t be hitting theaters until 2012, Tim Burton is starting to lock down the voice cast for the upcoming, feature length stop-motion animated version of his 1984 short film “Frankenweenie.”

Deadline reports that Winona Ryder, Martin Short, Martin Landau and Catherine O’Hara will lend their voices to the film, with Ryder voicing Elsa, while Landau will provide the pipes for Mr. Rzykruski. Meanwhile, Short and O’Hara will tackle five characters each: Short will handle Bob, Nassor, Toshiaki, Victor’s Dad and Mr.

Thomas Haden Church, Martin Landau & Ezra Miller Join Kate Bosworth & Demi Moore In ‘The Reasonable Bunch’

Thomas Haden Church, 82-year-old Martin Landau and up and coming young actor Ezra Miller (“Afterschool, City Island” and Lynne Ramsay’s “We Need To Talk About Kevin”) have all joined the cast of “The Reasonable Bunch,” the directing debut of Barry Levinson’s 25-year-old son Sam Levinson.

Kate Bosworth, Ellen Barkin, Ellen Burstyn and Demi Moore are already attached to star. The project used to be known as “Devil in My Shoes” and according to Variety, it shoots next week in Michigan.

TIFF: ‘Lovely, Still’ Q&A With Director Nik Fackler

We didn’t adore “Lovely, Still” in the least; the debut feature from 24-year-old Omaha director Nik Fackler (he’s got ties to the whole Saddle Creek label and those guys scored the film) and we’re not entirely convinced about him in general, but let’s give him a break. He’s young and he’s got some decent intentions. During a screening of the film at TIFF, he talked about the film, how he came up with the story of two senior citizens falling in love, and how he got Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn to appear in the film.

Here’s a film we didn’t see the younger bloggers (and a lot of people) really giving a shit about. But thesps like Martin Landau and Ellen Burstyn (whom we adore) in a story about a late-life courtship that keeps the bachelor Landau in a “constant state of wonderment and surprise”?

Yeah, “Lovely Still” totally sounded like something we’d love to see.

Boy, were we wrong. The film is directed by a 24-year-old video director Nik Fackler — and the kids intentions were on the money.

Saddle Creek Mainstays And Bright Eyes Members Nate Walcott and Mike Mogis Score ‘Lovely Still’

People have complained, why no music-movie stories of late? (though we kinda killed it this week, no?)

Well for one, there hasn’t been that many movie-music notable news this year (at least not compared to last year) and secondly, the film festival circuit hadn’t hit where information is easy to access free from the hands of publicists that only want to put the news in one outlets hands (you lazy fuckers).

So yeah, scan the Toronto International Film Festival and you’ll find some interesting bits of info, the latest being that Saddlecreek mainstays and Bright Eyes conspirators/collaborators Mike Mogis and Nate Walcott have scored the music to the upcoming film, “Lovely, Still,” which stars the excellent Ellen Burstyn and Martin Landau as an couple who begin a late-life courtship that’s full of surprises.
