By the time you read this, the world will probably know what songs Warner Bros. has decided to submit from “Barbie” for Original Song Oscar consideration. And there is an embarrassment of riches. There is the Dua Lipa song of summer, “Dance The Night Away,” Billie Eillish’s smash “What Was I Made For?” and, of course, the Ryan Gosling showstopper, “I’m Just Ken.” But for Mark Ronson and Andrew Wyatt, who have music by credit on the film and produced the soundtrack album, it’s clear their heart is with the latter.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences started off the month by inviting 842 new members into the mix. Assuming they all agree to join, which is never the case, this swells the membership to almost 9,000 members. This year’s class also helps AMPAS come closer to many of the diversity goals it has strived for since the #OscarsSoWhite controversy in 2016.

According to the Academy, 50% of the new members are women and push the overall percentage from 25 to 32%.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper won Best Song Written For Visual Media for “Shallow” from “A Star is Born.” Ludwig Göransson work for “Black Panther” won Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media and “The Greatest Showman” took best Compilation Soundtrack For Visual Media.
