Alongside prominent works of autofiction like James Gray’s “Armageddon Time” or Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” there’s a less conventional but no less revelatory work that also emerged this year: Mark Pellington’s “Going All the Way: The Director’s Edit.” Note the semantics of the title. Pellington doesn’t provide a director’s cut here, with him simply making a few tweaks to present a slightly altered version of what audiences first saw.

Pellington used that success to move into dramatic live-action features, which segues nicely into his latest (re) release. Oscilloscope Laboratories has teamed with the director to present the never-before-seen 4K re-edit of his vibrant Sundance Film Festival hit and directorial debut, “Going All The Way: The Director’s Edit.”

Originally released in 1997, Pellington’s debut was based on Dan Wakefield’s best-selling novel about two young men facing an uncertain future in 1950s Indiana after their return from the Korean War.

With the likes of Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe and Jeremy Piven leading Mark Pellington’s John Cassavetes-inspired indie drama “I Melt With You” we always figured some estrogen would be added to the balance out the mix; we just didn’t think the choice would be so….interesting.

Porn star Sasha Grey along with along with Zander Eckhouse (“Huge”), Abhi Sinha (“The Social Network”) and Arielle Kebbel (“Red Mist”) have joined the film about “a group of college buddies (Jane, Lowe and Piven) who, now as adults, look within themselves and find emptiness when they have their annual summer reunion.

Update: Is this story BS? Mulligan’s reps tell Movieline it is, but frankly, we’re not sure this is simply obligatory publicist denial as Pajiba’s sources are generally spot-on.

Few actresses are in as much demand at the moment as Carey Mulligan. After breaking through at Sundance last year with her astonishing performance in “An Education,” the young star has another potential awards contender coming up with “Never Let Me Go,” as well as a high-profile role in “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” and she’s going to be filming “On Chesil Beach” with Sam Mendes in a few months, and has been linked to Wentworth Miller’s script “Stoker,” alongside Jodie Foster.

Mark Pellington’s microbudgeted $1 million dollar John Cassavetes-inspired drama “I Melt With You” has found its fourth and final male lead. Christian McKay, perhaps best known for playing Orson Welles in Richard Linklater’s “Me And Orson Welles,” who also has a role in Woody Allen’s forthcoming “You Will Meet A Tall Dark Stranger” has joined Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe and Jeremy Piven in Pellington’s grim film that will focus on the “pain of the modern male psyche” as it “follows four college friends now in their forties who find themselves immersed in various stages and types of mid-life crises.”

Over at Pellington Films, we have our first look at what the resulting film might look like.

Do you know the story of video director/filmmaker Mark Pellington? It’s rather tragic and heartbreaking.

Pellington’s wife died suddenly in 2004, leaving the father to tend to his 2 1/2 -year-old daughter by himself.

While he did some work in the iterim, episodes of “Cold Case” and the concert film, “U23D,” the director finally followed up 2002’s “The Mothman Prophecies” with the feature-length film, “Henry Poole Is Here.”

Clearly inspired by this tragedy, the picture is essentially about a man who has given up all hope, and decides to drink himself to death.

Pajiba is reporting that Rachel McAdams is attached to two horror films right now. First up on the list, and the one that already has Guillermo Del Toro fans crying bloody murder, is a remake of 2007’s Spanish-language horror film, “The Orphanage.”

As we reported in January, hack director Mark Pellington (“Henry Poole Is Here,” “The Mothman Prophecies”) is sitting in the director’s chair, which means Del Toro’s “executive producer” title is pretty meaningless and we can’t imagine he’ll be looking over this film too carefully considering he’ll be full of hobbits in a couple of months.

Way back in January last year, Universal announced a prequel was in the works for John Carpenter’s 1982 classic “The Thing,” which would be helmed by commercial director Matthijs Van Heijningen and written by “Battlestar Galactica” producer and sci-fi writer, Ron Moore. After that, everything went quiet, but Production Weekly has ushered in the New Year with an announcement on their Twitter page that shooting is set to start in March in Toronto and continue through June.

Checking out Vulture’s Critic’s Poll for Worst Films of 2008 this morning, we were shocked! We made a glaring omission on our own Worst Films of 2008 list! One of our most loathed films of the year was the uber-sappy indie, “Henry Poole Is Here.” We called the painfully insipid film “hopeless,” and gave it a C- grade (which was generous).

We wrote, “somewhere along the mid-way point, the film bursts wide open into the great blue yonder of terrible.

God, poor Mark Pellington, the director of “Henry Poole Is Here. The former video director – Pearl Jam’s “Jeremy;” famous clips for NIN, Foo Fighters, The Flaming Lips; filmmaker behind “U2 3D” – lost his wife suddenly and tragically in a car accident four years ago and had to raise their 2 1/2-year-old daughter on his own.

Obviously the guy went through hell and back to make it through such devastation, so when you’re reading the press notes of ‘Henry Poole’ is here before the movie starts and being informed of all this tragedy, you can’t help but feel for the guy, side with him and understand his motivations to make a film rooted in touching and spiritual themes of life, death, love, loss, etc., even if those sentiments can be rather cliche.

We all remember “Henry Poole Is Here,” yes? This summer’s requisite quirky indie film is about a disillusioned drunk who attempts to hide from life in his rundown suburban home only to find he can’t escape the forces of hope when his neighbors discover a vision of Jesus as a water stain on the side of his house and then all hell breaks loose when pilgrimages to his home begin and modern-day miracles star to occur (hello run-on synopsis).

Sometimes it pays to watch trailers and pay attention.

This summer’s indie-flick “Henry Poole Is Here” will feature songs by Bob Dylan, Badly Drawn Boy, Ben Harper, Eels and Blur (sounds like the StereoVegan wheelhouse). We know this because we used our eyes when watching the trailer (see above).

But let’s back up a bit.

So Mark Pellington used to be a music video director – he made his name directing Pearl Jam’s most famous video, “Jeremy,” and also lensed lots of famous clips for NIN, Foo Fighters, The Flaming Lips and Alice In Chains – then he went on to make direct “U2 3D” and a bunch of other crap (“The Mothman Prophesies”).
