Noah Baumbach Has Another Wes Anderson Collaboration In The Works; Still Hopes To Direct ‘Prep’ & ‘The Emperor’s Children’

Noah Baumbach’s fifth feature-length picture, “Greenberg” hits theaters later this month. The picture stars Ben Stiller as an aimless 40-something New Yorker who moves to Los Angeles in order to figure out his life while house sitting for his brother. Awkward, and recovering from a breakdown, while he’s there he begins an unlikely relationship with his brother’s assistant (Greta Gerwig).

Known for his adored and wry coming of age college film, “Kicking And Screaming” and his more caustic, but perceptively funny dramedies, “Squid & The Whale” and “Margot At The Wedding,” the writer/director is also celebrated for his writing collaboration with Wes Anderson on “The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou” and the Academy Award-nominated animated picture, “Fantastic Mr.

Yes, here at the Playlist it’s been an exhausting month. Anticipating the end of the aughts we’ve done the Best Films of the Decade (00-08), the Best Documentaries, Music Documentaries, and Best Animated films. Today we finally have our fairly comprehensive Best Soundtracks of the Decade (and Best Scores comes tomorrow).

As you can imagine, these lists could go on and on and on (and in a way they already do) and some of the rough lists we made are dizzying long.

The bad news for smaller studio imprints keeps piling up. Paramount Vantage, the artier, boutique arm of Paramount pictures is being absorbed by the larger studio including all areas of marketing, distribution and physical production. While only three people will be laid off (it’s a small wing), the consolidation speaks to a larger and growing trend of major film studios cutting back on spending and downsizing their indie tentacles (what so now it’s all blockbusters from here in?

We pretty much adore Noah Baumbach’s work, so it’s nice to hear that someone is letting him make another film. Especially after the poor and mixed reception to his last film, “Margot At The Wedding” – a fantastically funny and sometimes brutal look at dysfunctional families that we loved, but not even the critics – the only people who seem to “get” his movies – seemingly aimed for seemed to enjoy it much (it only received a 51% rating at Rotten Tomatoes).

In general, or as we’ve become more, *cough* sage, we’ve come to find Top 10s very arbitrary and in a way, superficial. Don’t you think the qualification of art is rather shallow?

This is a bit of a familiar rant to some, but art isn’t made within the constraints of a 12-month vacuum. Release dates are arbitrary, random and or monetarily premeditated; all of which have nothing to with ranking them numerically.

Last Minute For Your Consideration: The Playlist Sums Up Shit That Will Get Overlooked Come Oscar Noms Tomorrow

Every one’s doing the For Your Consideration pieces, trying to get the Academy to take one last glance at a certain performance or job on set that has been overlooked or undervalued. So, why we don’t we join the herd, shall we? The main difference is we’re not delusional enough to a) believe this will change anything* and b) that these people have much of a prayer. Here’s to hoping that some of them get some appreciation somewhere down the line and our little attempt on shining some love on strong and overlooked work this year.

What’s that? 2007 ended three weeks ago? Yeah, go fuck yourself, we work on our own timetable. So anyhooo, there were like, a bunch of movies released this year and a few of them even had music in them. You may have noticed it’s our raison d’être (other than calling BS on things). We spent a lot of time this year discussing, debating and obsessing over certain soundtracks this year. It would be pretty easy to say we picked a good year to start a blog about music in movies.

While we’re encouraging you to not go to films, how about we be positive for once? The New York Times has an excellent feature on the bitingly funny and trenchantly painful new Noah Baumbach film, “Margot At The Wedding” which stars Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Jack Black and is one of our favorite films of the year so far (our review).

It’s about two sisters – one who is a neurotic, mean spirited, and exasperatingly critical and difficult (Kidman in a daring, tour de force performance), and one a free-spirited bohemian (an always-amazing Jason Leigh) who is getting a married to an underachieving schlub (Black).

Our belated New York Film Festival review.

We’ve been rooting for Noah Baumbach for years. Most of his early films were extremely clever and droll, but problematic (though”The Squid & The Whale” is pretty fantastic), yet even when he’s fallen flat (“Mr. Jealousy”), he’s always showcased a mountain full of promise.

Early reports for his 5th feature “Margot At The Wedding” were mixed and that got us a little worried.

The story of ‘Margot’ is about two sisters and their incredibly dysfunctional family and relationship.

Free Scripts For Films Not Released: ‘Margot At The Wedding,’ ‘There Will Be Blood,’ ‘Kite Runner’

Let’s point out something that the folks at SlashFilm have already pointed out (with lots of disclaimers to cover their butt: “we may have pointed out how to download these, but we would never!”).

In their piece about “American Gangster” leaking online, there’s a curious part at the bottom that almost has nothing to do with the piece other than the concept of things leaking early. But they’ve noticed that the Paramount Vantage site has uploaded free pdf versions of five screenplays to a public “For Your Consideration” website.

‘Margot At The Wedding’ Soundtrack Tracklist Finalized

Ok, so there’s not much new here, but “The Margot At The Wedding” soundtrack tracklist has been slightly tweaked.

As we first revealed here, the soundtrack is set for a November 13 release date and features tracks by the Dinosaur Jr., the dB’s, Blondie, Karen Dalton and Donovan (and is a rather excellent and tastefully chosen mix of songs.).

There’s barely anything different, but one of the notable omissions is Fleetwood Mac’s “That’s All For Everyone” from the rechampioned Tusk (but we’ve got it below so you don’t miss out, but yes you’ll hear it in the film) and the addition of ’70s soft-rock singer/songwriter Stephen Bishop’s hit “On and On” (yes, it’s a bit of a slow day, but we really love this soundtrack and movie).

The fall Oscar prestige season is in full swing and a bunch of films will be competing for both your dollars and the consideration of a certain Academy. But awards are whateves, so without further adieu, the second part to our Fall Film Preview. This pretty much concludes the films you need to keep your eye on between now and the end of December.

Noah Baumbach’s follow-up to the very-excellent “The Squid In The Whale,” follows an uptight ice-queen (perfectly cast with Kidman) who objects to her sister (Jennifer Jason-Leigh) marrying a schlub of a loser (Jack Black) and family dysfunction ensues.

Is Noah Baumbach the new Wes Anderson (especially now since Wes Anderson apparently can’t make a decent film)? He’s been fetted by the Criterion collection, wrote ‘Life Aquatic’ with Wes, had his excellent and very-underrated film, “The Squid & The Whale,” executive produced by Wes and he’s writing with Anderson yet again for their Roald Dahl adaptation of the book, “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.”

Ok, maybe people realize who Baumbach is, but he’s still not fetishized or celebrated as often.

Noah Baumbach’s Margot At The Wedding Coming November 16

Are we the only ones entirely psyched to see this movie? Entirely possible, but we’re big Noah Baumbach fans and his last film, “The Squid & The Whale” finally tapped his full potential.

The dysfunctional family drama that stars Nicole Kidman, Jennifer Jason Leigh (Baumbach’s wife), Jack Black (and an appearance by John Turturro) was originally scheduled for October now has a firm date of November 16 according to Entertainment Weekly.

The script captures ”the worst of all your family dynamics coming into play,” co-star Leigh told EW.
