In the classic ’61 “Twilight Zone” episode, five characters are in search of an exit. The clown, the ballerina, the major, the musician, and the tramp all find themselves entrapped and yearning to glimpse beyond the rim of their enclosure. We know them by the roles they play and, unsettlingly, their own senses of identity struggle to emerge beyond what their costumes tell them they are. This disquieting dynamic extends loosely from Rod Serling’s fingertips, coming to a stop at Shadyside to settle over a group of kids trapped in their own existence like flies on sticky paper, all situated on the grounds of a groovy summer camp.

As long as there have been procedurals, there have been burnt out, down on their luck cops, but Detective Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) seems to have hit every branch on the cliché tree. An alcoholic prone to long leaves of absence when he’s boozing, Harry also claims that he can’t sleep, except when he drinks enough to pass out, which more often than not, will be on a street curb or park bench, rather than his own bed.

“Logan” is not your standard superhero movie, and in fact, it shakes off many off the tropes we’ve come to associate with the genre. James Mangold‘s film offers a despairing view of Wolverine, a broken man, who’s chasing his demons down the bottle, in a picture that often feels more like a western than your average blockbuster. It’s those qualities that make the film so unique, and the aim to do something different carried over to the score, with Oscar-nominated composer Marco Beltrami (“3:10 To Yuma,” “The Hurt Locker“) meeting the challenge head-on.

“Logan” isn’t playing by the same rules as previous Wolverine movies. It’s going R-rated, and is already promising a much more serious tone than the already sober entries “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and “The Wolverine.” Even more, with a slated score by Cliff Martinez, generally known for his moody fare for directors like Nicolas Winding Refn and Steven Soderbegh, “Logan” — at least on paper — has the makings of a truly singular superhero movie.
