He’s also one of the rare filmmakers to receive a Career Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival and the Honorary Golden Palm from Cannes. And now, film fans can enjoy one of his greatest works, “Francisca,” sporting a brand-new 4K restoration later this month.

On the eve of moving to Italy with his mother, Natan joins his father, Jorge, in an adventure on the largest coral reef in Mexico where his grandfather resides. It’s there that Pedro Gonzalez-Rubio’s film flourishes as a multi-generational study of familial love and legacy with Natan immersing himself into the world of his predecessors, learning skills and facts he’ll scarcely use in urban Italy and connect with a father and grandfather who’ll soon be but a distant memory.

CG’s Ryan Krivoshey says the film will be released domestically “this winter,” which is a surprisingly fast turn around as compared to both other de Oliveira films (“Eccentricities of a Blond Haired Girl,” which played in Toronto last fall and which Cinema Guild is just now finally releasing into theaters — and only in NYC and LA, thus far) and Cannes entries from divisive filmmakers in general.

The film is adapted from a short story of the same name by 19th century realist author Eca de Queiroz (“The Crime of Padre Amaro”), and is considered by Oliveira to be an homage to the writer, updating the material to present day, but composing the film in a very classical way, with Oliveira’s trademark long takes and minimalist plotting.
