There’s probably no better evidence of the modern social and cultural difference between Europe and North America than in the French film, “Jeanne du Barry.” Written, directed, and produced by French filmmaker/actress Maïwenn and starring herself and Johnny Depp, just by Depp’s participation, it became something of a controversial movie in North America.

In the United States, despite winning his defamation trial lawsuit against Amber Heard, Depp is still essentially persona non-grata following his many controversies and the tabloid-heavy divorce reports that led to that infamous trial (Depp hasn’t starred in a big Hollywood movie since “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” in 2018 and was dropped for its 2022 sequel).

The Cannes Film Festival announces its Official Selections for its 76th edition next Thursday, but fans already know about some movies premiering on the Croisette this year.  Martin Scorsese‘s “Killers Of The Flower Moon” will be at the festival, for instance, as will James Mangold‘s “Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny.” And the opening film for Cannes 2023 has already been confirmed, too: Maïwenn‘s “Jeanne du Barry,” which also serves as the onscreen return for Johnny Depp.

The Cannes Film Festival is giving a boost to Johnny Depp‘s attempted film industry comeback. Organizers announced today that Maïwenn‘s historical drama “Jeanne du Barry,” which features Depp as King Louis XV, will open the 76th edition of the famed festival on Tuesday, May 16. The film will also open in theaters across France on the same day.

Maïwenn, whose acting roles include “High Tension” and her own directorial debut “Pardonnez-moi,” plays the title role, the woman who rose to be the King Louis XV’s last maîtresse-en-titre (chief royal mistress) before the French Revolution ended his reign.

Ever wonder what “Entourage” would be like if it were about French Muslims and Johnny Drama had a slightly larger propensity for violence? Because that’s precisely what “The Price of Success” is. And I apologize in advance for the amount of parallels I’m going to draw between this film and and Vinny Chase’s crew but as I have (embarrassingly enough) seen every episode of that show it’s sort of inevitable.
