The USC Libraries announced the nominees for the 34th USC Scripter Awards this morning and it was perhaps the most genre-based group of honorees ever. “Dune,” “Station Eleven” and “WandaVision” earned nominations in both the film and television categories. The Scripter is given to the best adapted screenplays in said fields and, unlike other awards, honors the author of the original material as well.

Somewhat of a precursor to the Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar, this year’s other film nominees are “The Lost Daughter,” “Passing,” “The Power of the Dog” and “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” The rest of the recognized television projects are “Dopesick,” “Maid,” and “The Underground Railroad.”

The Libraries also announced that Barry Jenkins will receive the USC Libraries Literary Achievement Award for his contributions to cinematic storytelling, including his work adapting the 2017 Scripter winner “Moonlight” and the 2019 finalist “If Beale Street Could Talk.”

It should be noted that only English-language adaptations are eligible for the Scripter.

For us, TV is a blessing and a curse. For years, we were mainly a film website, having evolved beyond the original remit of just doing film-related soundtracks (too small of a thing, ultimately). And while yes, people like David Lynch did TV in the ’90s (“Twin Peaks“) and various filmmakers dabbled in the medium throughout the years, it wasn’t until the early 2010s and the advent of streaming that filmmakers started heavily working in television and really up-ended the game.

The National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle have had their say. Now, the American Film Institute’s jury of industry professionals and media members (who decides this group is always quizzical) has made their top 10 selections for 2021 for both film and television. The latter saw recent newcomers “West Side Story,” “Nightmare Alley” and, shockingly (considering the reviews), “Don’t Look Up” make the list.

September ended up being a tremendously entertaining month for new TV series, from the collective buzz shows such as “Midnight Mass” created to the surprise, super addictive, and mega-hit “Squid Game.” Due to the surplus of quality television last month, it makes October, on the surface at least, appear a little bare in comparison, though there’s always room for another” Squid Game” to completely monopolize audiences’ attention spans.

“Maid” is inspired by Stephanie Land‘s bestselling memoir “Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive,” and will be written by Molly Smith Metzler, who will serve as showrunner.
