Everyone loves a deep-sea survival thriller, right? Take a beautiful day, two friends, an unexpected turn of events, and a near-disaster, and voila, all the ingredients for nail-biting intrigue, whether its sharks, lack of oxygen, or worse. That’s pretty much the same premise for the new thriller, “The Dive.” Starring Louisa Krause (“Dark Waters,” “The Girlfriend Experience”) and Sophie Lowe (“Medieval,” “Blow The Man Down”), “The Dive” is directed by Max Erlenwein (“Stereo”) and features a script co-written with Joachim Hedén (“Breaking Surface”).

Earlier this year, comic book writer/artist and filmmaker Dash Shaw presented his latest animated film, “Cryptozoo” at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival to much acclaim. Shaw was primarily known for his inventive comic book work but then quickly moved into animated filmmaking with “My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea,” which was critically acclaimed and had its world premiere at the 2016 Toronto International Film Festival.

The sex in season two of “The Girlfriend Experience” is even less sexy than the sex in its first, if you can believe it. It’s not supposed to be sexy, of course, or titillating. It’s provocative, as graphically staged sex scenes should be, but showrunners Amy Seimetz and Lodge Kerrigan put up a barrier between the audience and its steamier sequences. We aren’t participants. We’re observers on the sidelines.

Making the transition to an anthology series is risky for any show. Switching gears to a brand-new story could either help illuminate and expand the themes of a series or, if not done right, allow it to crumble under the weight of its ambition. But with the combination of great talent involved and intriguing storylines set in motion, the high-wire act is one that can certainly be pulled off.

And it appears that could very well be the case for “The Girlfriend Experience,” Starz’s adaptation of Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh’s 2009 critically acclaimed film of the same name, which is hitting the reset button for season two.

Steven Soderbergh has never been one to walk down the easy, expected path.
