With the US going through plenty of its own political scandals and corruption, it’s hard to really pay much attention to the rest of the world. However, thanks to a new film from Paolo Sorrentino, titled “Loro,” we can watch the story of another egomaniac billionaire that is given the keys to a country.

As seen in the trailer for “Loro,” the film tells the story of Silvio Berlusconi, the man who became Prime Minister in the mid-2000s Italy.

Poorly structured, half-baked, and unrealized, writer/director Paolo Sorrentino‘s “Loro” is the worst kind of movie not because it is bad, but because it squanders immeasurable potential. A true-ish story about greed, ambition, sex, and politics, the film should blow the ceilings off theaters in Toronto, where it premiered this week at TIFF, yet it’s unlikely to do much except bore, confuse, and frustrate. Badly drawn characters push up hard against a script that doesn’t know how to balance one story against the others, resulting in a film that falls on its face as it tries to keep both feet planted on different sides of a narrative fence.

Fresh off his borderline crazy series “The Young Pope,” Paolo Sorrentino has lined up his next feature, the long gestating “Loro.” The film will star regular Sorrentino collaborator Toni Servillo (“The Great Beauty,” “Il Divo“) as former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi.

Berlusconi is an interesting figure in Italian politics. He served as prime minister for nine years and was elected to the senate in 2013 before being convicted that same year for tax-fraud.

Fresh from helming the ten-episode “The Young Pope” for Sky/HBO (our review), the director is already gearing up his next feature film. And it’ll revolve around one of the most controversial Italian leaders in recent memory.
