Andrew Niccol’s 2005 film, “Lord of War,” is the epitome of a decent film. The box office was fine, but not great. And the reviews were mixed but leaning towards good. All that to say, it is a perfectly adequate film. Well, in this world of sequels, reboots, and franchise fever, it was only a matter of time before Niccol had a chance to go back to the well for a new film in this budding franchise, “Lords of War.”

According to Vendôme Pictures, the studio behind “CODA” and the aforementioned “Lord of War,” Andrew Niccol is teaming up with star Nicolas Cage for the film, “Lords of War.” The sequel picks up years after the first film to find Cage’s arms-dealer character discovering he has an adult son.

While James Bond’s super-spy allure has been sanded down some by the nitty-gritty realism of Sam Mendes and Daniel Craig’s recent iterations, it’s pretty safe to say when someone mentions title sequences, we all still think of the ardently unreal (and often beautifully psychedelic) openings of the two dozen-plus 007 films — or more specifically the assassin camera targeting Bond down the barrel of a gun. The truth is, though, that most title sequences — born from the necessity of simply telling audiences the name of the movie — are folded much more seamlessly into the fabric of the film.

Joss Whedon loves details. That’s seen throughout his work in film and on television, but that’s also particularly noticeable in how the filmmaker uses title cards, particularly in the first two “Avengers” films, as noted by YouTube’s Nerdwriter1. In the first movie, for instance, it’s planted as a joke at the beginning. One character asks, “What do we do?” and we get our answer with “The Avengers!” It sets the loose tone for the whole shebang, drawing attention to the fact that we all know this is just a movie, and that it’s not going to take itself too seriously.
