The list was populated by a handful of obvious — though necessary — choices, like “Looper,” “Interstellar,” and “Inception.” But the bulk of the picks came from the relatively new tradition of low budget sci-fi. Certainly sci-fi flicks of all shapes and sizes have been around since the dawn of cinema, but advances in digital cameras and post-production effects have made it a far more accessible genre for filmmakers, both budding and established, to tackle with a minimal budget (see the watermark: Shane Carruth‘s “Primer,” which he made for just $7,000).

The robot butler and trips to the drug store in hovercars version hasn’t yet arrived, but the first 15 years of this century have been extremely fruitful for big-screen science fiction.

Sci-fi is almost as old as cinema itself —1902’s Georges Méliès’ “A Trip To The Moon” is generally seen as the first example— but it became hugely popular in late 20th century filmmaking in the aftermath of “Star Wars,” if also somewhat watered down.

He’s been talking about it since spring of 2009, but it finally looks like Rian Johnson’s ambitious sci-fi time-traveling thriller “Looper” is going to get made with Production Weekly tweeting that the project will begin filming in January.

The film will star Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis in a story that Johnson has previously described as “set in a near future where time travel doesn’t exist but will be invented in a few decades.

Umm, ok. We don’t think that Joseph Gordon-Levitt looks anything like a young, handsome Bruce Willis, but Deadline says Rian Johnson seems to disagree.

And fine, we’ll take that leap of faith… for now.

Willis is set to play an older version of Gordon-Levitt in Johnson’s upcoming sci-fi pic “Looper.” As we reported recently, the film’s premise is based around time travel, with crime syndicate hitmen and their victims going back in time, thus leaving no body or evidence of the killer’s victim.

Rian Johnson has turned out to be a rather divisive filmmaking figure; this writer, and many others, found “Brick” to be one of the most original and promising debuts by a filmmaker in recent years (it made our Best of 2006 list, as it happens), and found “The Brothers Bloom” to be a deeply pleasurable experience. Plenty of others don’t share these views, however, and there are some here who would rather undergo “Marathon Man”-style dentistry than sit through the latter, in particular.

Director Rian Johnson has revealed several more tidbits to Vulture regarding his follow up to “The Brothers Bloom.” The sci-fi project, known as “Looper,” was previously reported to be about “modern day hit men whose victims are sent to them from a futuristic world.”

“It’s not like a ‘I, Robot’–type thing. It’s a very character-based film, and it’s very violent and very dark,” Johnson revealed. “It’s set in the near future, and things are very bad in an industrial town in Kansas.

A new poster for Todd Phillip’s “The Hangover” has been unveiled. Starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis, the film is set for release June 5th. [Cinematical]

Tom Hanks has revealed that work is well under way for the third installment of the “Toy Story” franchise: “I have been in and done three big complete recording sessions and will probably have at least one more to do, possibly in about eight months.

The ever-evolving, eclectic and up-and-coming auteur Rian Johnson is set to expand his portfolio once again by bringing his unique point of view to the action genre. Johnson is set to direct the time-travel thriller “Looper,” from his own original script. He is teaming up with producer Ram Bergman, who produced his previous two films, “Brick” and the recent “The Brothers Bloom,” which screened at this years Toronto Films Festival and received strong word of mouth as well a December release date (but a film we didn’t particularly like as it was whimsically overwrought).
