Argh and curse our old botched site (thanks Google). It’s really been forward steam ahead for us, but lately we haven’t been able to get cached versions of our old stories back which is kind of aggravating the shit out of us (we should have good news next week, sigh…).

Anyhow, that’s a whiny preamble about how we can’t dig up our 2009 Cannes review of Ken Loach’s life-affirming dramedy, “Looking For Eric,” which opens in theaters (limited release this weekend; and we had hoped to simply reprint or recycle it).

Yes, the obsessive comprehensive look at films from 2010 continues, but this time it’s slightly different. Alright, we don’t anticipate these films, because, well, we’ve already seen them. But you probably do. Here’s 30 films we’ve already seen and that are probably fairly high on your most anticipated 2010 list if you’re a film festival goer and a cineaste. However, not all of them turned out as great as we had hoped. Buyer beware with some.

Wes Anderson Editing His ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox,’ Paramount Delays ‘Shutter Island’ For ‘Up In The Air,’ New Trailer For ‘Agora’

– It’s been a while since he’s been seen in person? Thanks to fellow director Mark Romanek and his photo blog, here is a sight of Wes Anderson in the editing room for his upcoming film “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” It looks like the characters on-screen behind him are Mr and Mrs. Fox, voiced by George Clooney and Meryl Streep. ‘Fantastic Mr. Fox’ will debut at the London Film Festival this October.

– Variety [via InContention] reports that a significant reason why Martin Scorsese’s “Shutter Island” was delayed was the fact that Paramount felt it was more financially viable to back Jason Reitman’s “Up In The Air’ for an Oscar run using the festival circuit and subsequent award-season buzz.

Yeah, yeah, you’re getting sick of hearing about the 62nd Annual Cannes Film Festival.

Though, even if it was a weak year – which it unquestionably was – it’s still the cinematic Olympics and it sets the tone for the rest of the year. What does that mean given the festival’s relative mediocrity this year? Well, that 2009 is probably going to be a potentially crappy year for film. The writers strike crippled the American output (how many Oscar hopefuls can you count on one hand?

‘Antichrist’ Gets Misogyny “Anti-Prize” At Cannes

Charlotte Gainsbourg may have won the Best Actress prize at Cannes ’09 for her harrowing portrayal of a mother gone almost suicidal after losing her child (and then batshit nuts, or possessed later on depending on your POV) in Lars Von Trier’s controversial and polarizing picture, “Antichrist” (we which we had mixed feelings about; neither a masterpiece or disaster), but the Ecumenical Jury at the Croisette was less kind to the film.

This jury which honors films with “spiritual value’ (though note it was originally started by Christian filmmakers) is one of three juries at the Cannes and they gave their top award to Ken Loach’s life-lessons football dramedy, “Looking For Eric,” starring real-life French football star Eric Cantona as himself (a film we truly enjoyed as well).

Cannes ’09: Ken Loach’s Shoots And Scores With Celebratory Life Lessons Football Dramedy, ‘Looking For Eric’

What an unexpected treat Ken Loach’s soccer inspiring football-centric “Looking For Eric,” was and makes the case for going into a film mostly blind.

Loach’s 2006 film “The Wind That Shakes The Barley” won the Palm d’Or that year, but we didn’t know much about this one going in other than it was apparently a “comedy” — not the most obvious genre, for the naturalistic, kitchen-sink dramatist — and that it revolved around football (soccer for the yanks).

Cannes ’09: The Mid-Way Report Card, Is The Festival Not Really Making The Grade?

The 2009 Cannes Film Festival runs, on paper, from May 13-24, but in reality it, really runs from the 14-23, as that’s when the in-competition screenings begin and end. So today is really the mid-way point of the festival and so far, it’s feeling like a weak crop this year (it’s already Tuesday here, we’re in the future). One of the film’s expected to make a mark at the festival, Lars Von Trier’s “Antichrist,” did make a splash, but it sounds like it polarized everyone into love or hate it experiences.

Cannes 2009: 24 Posters

Ok, certainly not all of the posters from all the films at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, but FinDeCinema, has 23 of them. We found a 24th in Hirokazu Kore-eda’s “Air Doll” (“Kuki Ningyo”), which we’re pretty sure we first spotted at Twitch somewhere. We thought it’d be fun to make a big collage. We’ve seen one Cannes film early which is “Drag Me To Hell,” which was not our bag at all, but fans of light and innocuous comical horror will enjoy it we suppose.
