The title of writer B.J. Novak’s new FX anthology series is essential to understanding its approach, and also its failure. One can easily picture a whiteboard in a writer’s room consisting of as many shocking “premises” as possible, ways to grab viewers in the first two minutes. There were probably phrases like “Butt Plug,” “Sex Tape,” and “Mass Shootings.” And every episode of “The Premise” does start with a hook.

Remember the dustbowl-set American drama thriller “Dreamland” starring Margot Robbie from the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival? The film kinds of came and went and got forgotten, but in aftermath of Tribeca was bought by Vertical Entertainment. Following that, Paramount Pictures acquired the home entertainment and TV licensing rights to “Dreamland” and are co-releasing the film with Vertical this November.

Liz Garbus’ “Lost Girls” shares a subtitle with the Robert Kolker book it’s based on: “An Unsolved American Mystery.” The mystery in question is that of the Long Island serial killer, who murdered at least ten women— many of them sex workers —over some twenty years, near the South Shore of Long Island. Based on Garbus’ filmography, which includes the Oscar-nominated documentaries “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “The Farm: Angola, U.S.A,” you might assume this is yet another Netflix-bound true crime doc.

Like its source material, Susan Choi‘s novel of the same name, the plot of “American Woman” is inspired by a period in the life of kidnapped heiress Patty Hearst. Patty becomes “Pauline” in the feature-length adaptation, and the terrorist organization that abducted her, the SLA (Symbionese Liberation Army), becomes the “PAL,” but the story will otherwise still inspire feelings of déjà vu for those even remotely familiar with Hearst’s life story.

There are so many comedies about the follies that come with adult romantic relationships that it’s impossible to keep up. However, when a film with such a tried and true concept like that has a cast as good as the one in “Untogether,” we stop and take notice.

As alluded to earlier, the premise, as seen in the new trailer, for “Untogether” is about as easy to understand as any other romantic dramedy.

Actress Lola Kirke has, in a short time, curated quite the filmography. Appearing in “Gone Girl,” “Mistress America,” “Mozart in the Jungle,” and recently in the incredible “Gemini,” the actress has been collecting great role after great role. One of our favorites was “AWOL,” fromDeb Shoval, making her directorial feature debut. The film stars Lola Kirke as Joey, a young woman from a small, economically depressed town in Pennsylvania, who has dreams of escaping for a better life through the Army.

The debut feature from writer/director Deb Shoval, “AWOL” is an arresting love story between two women whose relationship is influenced as much by their environmental circumstances as it is by their sexuality. Lola Kirkeplays the sly, charming Joey, who falls hard for local siren Rayna (Breeda Wool, also excellent in Lifetime’s “UnREAL”). Shoval, who co-wrote the script with novelist and writer Karolina Waclawiak, captures the blind recklessness of first love, in a lesbian love story that’s only partially about the characters’ queerness.
