With summer winding down, and movies being in a something of a slow holding pattern before the fall festival and awards seasons kicks off this week, Joe and myself dig into a few recent documentaries that’ve gotten attention recently: “Lo and Behold: Reveries of a Connected World,” “Tickled,” and our main subject for this episode, “O.J.: Made in America.” The last segment features our discussion of Joe’s latest pick for Hold Up: Richard Linklater‘s 1996 mostly-forgotten film, “SubUrbia.”

We’ve already regaled you with Best (Narrative) Films, Best TV Shows and our most popular hate-read Worst Films of the Year So Far, so that only leaves Best Documentaries of 2016 to fill you in on. Since the doc landscape is, if anything, changing even faster than that of traditional broadcast TV or theatrically distributed features, we’ve relaxed our rules a little here and allowed titles that we caught online or at festivals that have not yet been widely released to sneak onto this list.

I’m no marketing expert, but I’d wager “Lo And Behold: Reveries Of The Connected World” might get more attention if it was just called, “Werner Herzog Goes On The Internet.” And while that might be a slightly misleading title, it does encapsulate what the singular filmmaker explores in his latest documentary.

Essentially, the thesis of ‘Lo and Behold’ suggests while humanity might think it has a firm grasp on the technology we interact with every day, there are changes coming on the horizon that are beyond the scope of our current imagination.
