The subways of New York City are a breeding ground for tension, what with the rush of strangers, the jarring disruptions, and the uncaringly close quarters. For women, it’s even more stressful, as too many men use the claustrophobic enclosure as a means of exploiting a literally captive audience. This is how “Materna” begins, on a subway with one ranting man (Sturgill Simpson) disturbing his fellow passengers.

People underestimate the power that pets possess over human relationships. Although the notion of co-owning a dog, cat, or an otherwise adorable animal with a partner might appear harmless at first glance, rest assured, jealousy and inconvenience are bound to disrupt the human connection at some point.

Starring indie actor Lindsay Burdge (“A Teacher”), the film is arch and dreamy, and features a deliciously sly narration by Academy Award-winner Anjelica Huston. Our review described it as “a wry and disturbed look at lust and longing… delightfully twisted.”

Directed by Nathan Silver the filmmaker told us in a quick email interview he wanted to write a lead part for Burdge who had a role in his previous film, “Actor Martinez.

Starring Lindsay Burdge (“A Teacher”), the movie is influenced by the erotic 1970s dramas of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, but gives a deviously funny edge (think Roman Polanski’s “The Tenant”) to what is a delicious psycho sexual drama.
