As we reported back in early June, Richard Linklater was picking himself up and dusting himself off from the kick in the dirt that was the shelving of both his girls-on-a-road-trip Obama inauguration flick “Liars A-E” and “That’s What I’m Talking About,” the spiritual sequel to “Dazed and Confused.” He wrote his intended rebound project, “Bernie,” based on a true-crime story out of East Texas that Linklater wrote 10 years ago. And when we spoke to Linklater he described the project as, “my ‘Fargo’ in East Texas, where I grew up, so it’s crazy local with fifty characters.

As the legend had it, Samuel Goldwyn once told Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond during the development of a script that “You have all the scenes — just go home and word it in.” Screenwriters have never been treated particularly well in Hollywood, from the old studio system to the recent writer’s strike, and today’s climate is no different — in fact, until very recently, the market for spec scripts had been shrinking rapidly. Things may be on the up now, however, and there are plenty of exciting new voices who look like they’ll make a big splash in the next couple of years.

If there’s a ratio of affability to asshole on the karmic scale, something has really gone out of wack for filmmaker Richard Linklater in recent years, one of the most genial people in the industry who deserves some better luck.

In the last year, the filmmaker has had two projects go by the wayside (the spiritual sequel to “Dazed & Confused” which was shelved last summer, and the roadtrip buddy dramedy, “Liars A-E” that went under when Miramax collapsed) and one basically limp into theaters on a tiny and minuscule release (“Me & Orson Welles,” which only grossed $1.7 million despite a much bigger budget — though note the Box-Office Mojo estimated budget seems way overinflated).

There’s been a lot of Richard Linklater news of late. Not all of it positive, but some still hopeful.

His romantic road-trip comedy, “Liars (A-E),” was deep-sixed by Miramax which is has been downsized and struggling to stay afloat and that was a bit of a shame cause it would have been a great buddy vehicle for two unlikely leads Rebecca Hall and Kat Dennings (we just finished reading it, it was surprisingly fresh and sharp).

Oof. We were just thinking about this one last night. Richard Linklater is having a rough go of things. His spiritual sequel to “Dazed & Confused,” a college ’80s film titled, “That’s What I’m Talking About,” was shelved earlier this year and now another project, the political rom-com “Liars (A-E)” — that status of which we asked last night is at where exactly? — has been deep-sixed as well.

It was a rom-com project over at Miramax with Scott Rudin producing about a woman (Rebecca Hall) who retrieves lost items from her ex-boyfriends as she is on her way to President Obama’s inauguration.

Almost a year since first making its world premiere at the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival, Richard Linkalater’s “Me & Orson Welles,” starring Zac Efron, Christian McKay, and Claire Danes has finally found itself some U.S. distribution.

The film will hit select theaters on November 25 via an alliance assembled by U.K. finance and production company Cinemanx. It’s actually a frankensteined effort that includes Freestyle Releasing, Louisville-based Hart/Lunsford Pictures, who are putting up the P&A (promotion and advertising) costs, and Warner Bros Home Video who will handle the DVD release.

Edgar Wright has unveiled a shot of Jason Schwartzmann in his role as Gideon Graves in “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.” Graves is the seventh and final evil-ex boyfriend that Michael Cera’s titular Scott Pilgrim’ must defeat in order to win the hand of Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead). Graves’ character in the script amounts to an obnoxious, but amusing douchebag uber-hipster. [EdgarWrightHere]
