‘Country Strong’ Gets Official Music Video & New Poster

Well, this is for certain. Based on the official video for the upcoming boozy-country-singer-redemption-story-drama “Country Strong,” the filmmakers are aiming squarely at the new country crowd.

Featuring the film’s star and chanteuse Gwyneth Paltrow singing in a warehouse (sidenote: is this not the most boring music video cliché ever?) with random clips from the movie stuck in there as well. It also looks like it could be a commercial for jeans or pick-up trucks.

In between film panels at the New York Comic Con they showcased a couple of highly anticipated sneak peeks. Here’s what we saw.

“The Green Hornet”
As in a few other conventions, “The Green Hornet” had a presence on the floor, with the Black Beauty car on display for a number of fans. What was different was an entirely new action sequence, with 3D glasses handed out to patrons. In the short scene, Jay Chou as Kato dismantles a number of thugs using his martial arts expertise.

‘Country Strong’ Soundtrack Features Gwyneth Paltrow, Tim McGraw, Garrett Hedlund, Faith Hill & More

Call it “Crazy Heart” 2.0.

The very familiar sounding plot follows a rising singer-songwriter (Garrett Hedlund) who starts touring with a fading country singer (Gwyneth Paltrow). Tim McGraw and Leighton Meester will also feature. So it’s no surprise that the soundtrack will boast the cast showing off their vocal chops with Paltrow, Hedlund and Meester all singing songs on the disc. They are joined by decent roster of actual country talent including McGraw, Faith Hill, Lee Ann Womack, Patty Loveless, Hank Williams Jr.

A trailer for the country music drama “Country Strong” has been released, and the only surprising part of the whole thing is how much more country you thought it would be. Gwyneth Paltrow shows off an accent almost as obnoxious and exaggerated as Kyra Sedgwick’s accent in “The Closer,” if you can believe it. There was quite a bit of ambiguity surrounding the film based on the few photos that have been released, but we hope you didn’t get your hopes up.

Hell, it worked for Jeff Bridges in “Crazy Heart” so the folks over at Screen Gems are pretty much making a carbon copy of Fox Searchlight’s movie with a gender switch for their forthcoming Oscar season bait “Country Strong” starring Gwyneth Paltrow.

The film, previously known under the much better title “Love Don’t Let Me Down,” follows a rising singer-songwriter (Garrett Hedlund) who starts touring with a fading country singer (Gwyneth Paltrow). Tim McGraw (“The Blind Side”) and Leighton Meester (“Gossip Girl”) will also feature.

It still blows our mind, as a writer who grew up watching Hugh Laurie play the upper-class twit on British TV, that he’s gone on to a hugely successful second career as rugged, unshaven, grouchy Sherlock Holmes-based sex symbol Gregory House on the titular TV series. However, aside from his starring roles in the “Stuart Little” films, which pre-date the show, and voice-work in the terrible “Monsters Vs. Aliens,” he’s yet to convert his monumental success into Hollywood film work; he had to drop out of Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns” due to scheduling clashes with “House,” being replaced by Frank Langella, and the less said about “Street Kings” the better.

— New site Pajiba have been on fire of late, with a series of scoops that have proven to be pretty reliable. Their latest is that director Martin Campbell has abandoned Platinum Dunes’ most sacrilegious remake yet, their take on Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds.” This isn’t surprising – Campbell is taking on the massive tentpole “Green Lantern,” which will keep him busy for the next eighteen months, and according to Pajiba, he’s been replaced fairly quickly by Dennis Iliadis, the Greek-born director of the “Last House on the Left” remake, who will apparently retool the movie into a harder, gorier, R-rated version.

Groan: ‘Date Night’ Movie Trailer

Is our disdain predictable a mile away? That’s perfectly ok, because oh brother… The “Date Night” trailer has arrived. It’s about a case of mistaken identity that turns a bored married couple’s (Tina Fey, Steven Carell) attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous.

The team-up of these two comedians is an inspired pairing, but as directed by Shawn Levy (known for his admirable masterworks “Night at the Museum,” and “Cheaper By the Dozen”), this sort of looks like its geared for that exact audience; married couples that don’t have much going on and generally don’t go to theater that often.

James Franco & Mark Wahlberg Join Tina Fey & All-Star Cast For ‘Date Night’

We mentioned Tina Fey’s comedy “Date Night,” in only the slightest of passing because 1) it sounded generic, 2) we were lazy, 3) we don’t want to feel obligated to post about every single project the trades spit out and the blogs regurg. That said, time to upchuck, and mostly because the film actually has become slightly more interesting while maintaining its generic-ness.

It still does have boring, middle of the road comedy written all over it.
