Ever since the massive success of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” competitors have searched far and wide for similarly epic intellectual property to adapt into a mega-popular television series.  “Foundation,” based on the influential novels by iconic sci-fi author Isaac Asimov, is the latest attempt by Apple TV+ to fill that void.  The books are said to have inspired Frank Herbert to write “Dune” and George Lucas to create “Star Wars.”  If it lands with audiences, this series looks ambitious enough visually and thematically to serve as one of the streamer’s major cornerstones.

According to the official synopsis, “‘Foundation’ chronicles a band of exiles on their monumental journey to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire.”  Jared Harris (“Chernobyl,” “The Terror”) will star as Hari Seldon, a mathematician who predicts the Empire’s demise and decides to take radical action to alter the future.  Lee Pace (“Halt and Catch Fire,” “Pushing Daisies”) will play Brother Day, Emperor of the Galaxy.  Other cast members include Lou Llobel, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Terrence Mann, and Alfred Enoch.

TORONTO – Where do we even start with “Driven?” After an hour and 53 minutes, I’m not sure what Nick Hamm’s latest directorial effort wants to be. Is it supposed to be funny? Is it supposed to be poignant? Can it even find a tone that is compelling to watch? If the answer to all those questions is “I have no idea” than your movie probably has some serious problems.

“Driven” is an embellished account of how “Jim” (Jason Sudeikis, disappointing), an FBI informant (or a composite of one), randomly waltzed into the life of famed automaker John DeLorean (Lee Pace, doing his best) just as the famed automaker was attempting to launch his new automobile company in 1977.

“Halt and Catch Fire,” the once deeply underrated AMC show (now favored by critics three seasons later) about technology trailblazers and the personal computer revolution of the 1980s, boasts a superb cast in Lee Pace, Scoot McNairy, Kerry Bishé and Mackenzie Davis (the latter is so good, she’s been bagging roles in major Hollywood movies and is poised to be a star). So when the writing on the show fails (which is rare), or more importantly, gets stuck in a cul de sac (much more common), the cast always saves the season.
