‘The Philadelphia Story,’ Terry Gilliam’s ‘Jabberwocky’ & More Coming To Criterion

November is still a ways away — who knows what the hell will have happened in our collective Twitter feed by the time good ol’ Nov. comes around? In the event that we’re all still here in three month’s time, here’s what to expect from Criterion in the penultimate month of 2017.

For starters, Criterion is releasing a 4K restoration of “The Philadelphia Story,” the 1940 screwball comedy starring Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart (Stewart ended up winning an Oscar for his performance — the first and last Academy Award of his career).

John Woo Still Hopes To Remake ‘Le Samourai’ & ‘The Killer’; Also Wants To Do A Musical, Nearly Directed ‘Phantom Of The Opera’

For a while, it seemed like the door that was once wide open to Hollywood for John Woo quickly closed following a string of poorly received films. But it’s hard to keep to a good director down and following his well regarded four-and-a-half-hour epic “Red Cliff,” Hollywood is knocking once again.

Next spring, Woo will team with IMAX on his $90 million WWII project “Flying Tigers,” which will tells the story of a volunteer fighter squadron assembled to help the Chinese fight the Japanese before the U.S.’s involvement in the war.

The A/V Club has done one of the most uncongenial things a website can possibly do by not putting their recent Jim Jarmusch interview online therefore forcing us to do one of the most unattractive tasks imaginable: transcribing, blech.

Anyhow, the online/print mag spoke to the director of the polarizing surrealist noir, “The Limits of Control” (many hate it, eggheads like us fully enjoyed its hypnotically woozy qualities and European art film sensibilities) and his atypical approach this time out.

Jim Jarmusch Talks The Key Cinematic Influences Of ‘The Limits Of Control’

We were going to put a slight moratorium on reporting on Jim Jarmusch’s “The Limits of Control,” because a) we’ve seen it and b) we’ve written a ton about the film, but this amazing quote from the press notes about the influences of the film is just too good too pass up.

This is how Jarmusch says he pictured the film and if you’re a cinephile, this should probably give you an erection too.
