If Cannes has come to an end that means a slew of summer festivals is about to pop up around the globe. New York will see the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival debut next week while the 2024 Annecy International Animation Festival begins on June 9. At the end of the month, one of Europe’s longest-running tier A1 festivals, the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, will return for its 58th edition. This morning, KVIFF revealed a majority of its world premiere and competition slate and it includes new films from Mark Cousins, Oleh Sentsov, Moaz Deshe, and others.

Shot in lush super 16mm, Jake Paltrow’s “June Zero” takes a unique look back at the execution of Adolf Eichmann after his trial in Israel during the early 1960s. Told in a triptych, the film follows 13-year-old Libyan immigrant David (Noam Ovadia), who claims to have worked on the oven where Eichmann’s corpse was incinerated. Hayim (Yoav Levi, “Zero Dark Thirty”), a Moroccan guard assigned to Eichmann’s jail cell, and Micha (Tom Hagi), a Polish survivor of Auschwitz who became the chief interrogator at the trial.

The 56th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is right around the corner, and today the festival announced its two honorary awards for 2022. In something of a surprise, KVIFF will bestow the Crystal Globe for Outstanding Artistic Contribution to World Cinema presented to Geoffrey Rush. The KVIFF President’s Award will be given to Benicio del Toro. Both gentlemen will receive their awards during the festival’s closing ceremony on July 9.

The 2019 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival has come to an end and that means the competition jury has awards to hand out. This year’s five-member jury surprised by honoring Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov’s dramedy “The Father” with the festival’s top prize, the Crystal Globe. Jonás Trueba’s “The August Virgin,” which was honored with a Special Jury Mention, and Hong Khaou’s “Monsoon” were thought to be in contention by the critics attending the fest.

KARLOVY VARY – The 2019 Karlovy Vary Film Festival has been bookended by “Far From Heaven.” Both Julianne Moore and Patricia Clarkson, who starred in Todd Haynes’ 2002 classic, have been honored with the festival’s Crystal Globe for Outstanding Achievement in World Cinema. Moore received hers at the opening ceremony last week, and Clarkson will be honored at the closing ceremony tomorrow. The former sat down with the media for a press conference (broadcast on Czech television, no less) to discuss her career and other honors potentially down the road.

KARLOVY VARY – When your main character is wearing makeup that makes him or her unrecognizable for an entire feature-length film it better be good. In the case of “The True Adventures of Wolfboy,” a fantastical drama that centers on a teenage boy with hypertrichosis, it needs to be stellar. In that respect, director Martin Krejci was given a gift from a substantial makeup team that delivers award-worthy work.* You also need an actor that can deliver a rich performance under such circumstances and Krejci lucked out with the immensely talented Jaeden Martell.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is known for its international premieres and focus on Eastern European cinema, but the Czech Republic mainstay also waves with its annual tributes.  Last year saw Tim Robbins and Barry Levinson earn a Crystal Globe and at recent festivals, Willem Dafoe and Casey Affleck also were honored. This year the 54 edition of Karlovy Vary is bestowing its highest honor to Patricia Clarkson and Julianne Moore.

KARLOVY VARY – The 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival came to an end with another spectacular ceremony where Robert Pattinson took home the President’s Award, Barry Levinson accreted his Outstanding Contribution to World Cinema honor and Rada Jude’s Romanian drama “I Do Not Care If We Go Down In History As Barbarians” took the top prize, the Grand Prix – Crystal Globe.

Pattinson, who was also on hand for a screening of his film “The Rover” at the fest, noted, “So many filmmakers have told me this festival was so much fun and if you really want to party this is the place to do it.

Cannes may be right around the corner and Tribeca may be wrapping up, but we’re almost two months away from the start of the 53rd Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.  Today KVIFF announced that legendary filmmaker Milos Forman will be honored with his signature Czech film “Love of a Blonde” being selected as the opening night film. Before the opening ceremony, the Czech National Symphony Orchestra will perform music from Forman’s films other films “The Firemen’s Ball,” “Taking Off,” “Valmont,” “Amadeus” and “Hair,” among other selections.
