Jesus Christ, is there a tentpole that Sam Worthington isn’t going to star in? “Terminator Salvation,” “Avatar,” and “Clash Of The Titans” have all claimed the actor and now he’s looking to extend his talents for effects heavy, franchise material to Alex Proyas’ gestating “Dracula Year Zero.”

Based on a script by “Flash Gordon” writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, the film “explores the origin of Dracula, weaving vampire mythology with the true history of Prince Vlad the Impaler.

To no one’s surprise, “Hannah Montana: The Movie” took the box office by storm. Top heavy as all get-out, the film fell quite a bit from a $17 million opening day, but still scored $34 million to hit #1. It tops the $31 million the “Best of Both Worlds” concert film scored even though it was a fairly modest, non-IMAX affair. Does this mean Miley Cyrus is something of a box office draw? With the two “Hannah Montana” hits and “Bolt” on her resume, one could argue that she’s become less of a teen niche star and more of a genuine headliner.

$145 million. $127 million. $63 million. You’d think after severely shrinking grosses for each film in the franchise, the “Fast And Furious” series would be dead in the water. $72.5 million worth of ticket buyers evidently disagree, giving “Fast And Furious” the year’s biggest opening. Moviegoers have always been fond of car films, so despite diminishing returns, most pegged this installment, bringing back Vin Diesel and Paul Walker for the first time since the first film, as a big earner.

To the surprise of no one, Dreamworks’ “Monsters Vs. Aliens” scored a decisive #1 bow, scoring $58.2 million in receipts. The kiddie hit registered the year’s biggest opening numbers, besting the WB’s “Watchmen,” but they still might need a little bit of legwork to register a success. Indeed, the Hollywood accounting system is screwy like this, with “Monsters” opening on 4,000+ theaters, rendering the opening a tad less impressive considering how the film flooded the market.

The man with the Teflon career has come out on top again- Nicolas Cage’s thriller “Knowing” took the top spot with $24.8 million, thanks to, we would guess, cryptic, money-shot-loaded trailers and commercials. Cage’s star always seems in the pale until he uncorks another $20 million opening, one of the few actors who can open a picture, if only once a year or so. With this opening and the iffy word of mouth, the ceiling is probably close to the $60 million that “The Happening” did last summer.

Well, “Watchmen” fell off pretty sharply last weekend and lost to the Rock’s latest vehicle, “Race to Witch Mountain.” With three major releases this weekend–and quite a few films in limited release–it should be interesting to see what comes out on top. So, here’s the choices:

First up is “Duplicity,” the new movie by writer/director Tony Gilroy (“Michael Clayton”). Apparently Gilroy has chosen decidedly lighter fare for his follow up to ‘Clayton’ in this romantic comedy that follows two corporate spies played by Clive Owen (“Sin City”) and Julia Roberts (“Pretty Woman”).

The newest trailer for Nicolas Cage’s thriller “Knowing” has hit, a slightly modified version of the one they showed at NY Comic Con, and it hints at the massive carnage in this film. It also does a good job selling the film as having another trademark open-mouthed Nicolas Cage performance. The guy was born to look bored in prospective blockbusters. Anyway, as far as Cage movies go, the trailer places this somewhere between “Next” and “National Treasure,” but at least director Alex Proyas (“Dark City”) is aboard, so its bound to be better than the silly, silly premise of a doomsday-predicting time capsule.

More New York Comic-Con: We’re still catching up.

On Saturday, Warner Bros. ended their panel with McG’s “Terminator Salvation” presentation. McG is a relentless huckster and bullshitter, and to get on the audience’s good side, he came out, pumped up about the OTHER movies presenting during the day, both “Watchmen” and “Avatar.”

“I can say firsthand that [James Cameron’s] ‘Avatar’ is going to be phenomenal. He’s reinvented the wheel technically and his story understanding is second to none so i would get your hopes really high for Avatar.”

He also did he best Hulkamania impression during almost every question.

Saturday afternoon Summit Entertainment unveiled their panel, which involved a showcase for “Knowing,” “The Hurt Locker” and “Astroboy.” With a video introduction by director Alex Proyas (“Dark City”), we plunged into two clips for “Knowing” (about just under 10 minutes of footage total) which features Nicolas Cage as a man who learns the numbers found in a time capsule reveal a number of natural disasters that have or will happen in the future.
