The 92nd Academy Awards are just a week away, but the other film academy across the pond got a chance to have their say in the awards game as the 2020 BAFTA Awards were handed out in London. Universal Pictures’ “1917” dominated the proceedings winning Best Film and Best Director, Sam Mendes. The WW I thriller is a frontrunner to win both awards at the Oscars next Sunday.

“1917” also won Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, Best Production Design and Best British Film.

The 2020 nominees for the 47th Annie Awards have been announced and Hollywood’s animators, in this case the members of ASIFA-Hollywood,  have made some intriguing choices.  On the film side, Walt Disney Animation’s “Frozen 2” and LAIKA’s “Missing Link” led all nominees with 8 nods.  Netflix’s “Klaus” earned seven nods while Netflix’s “I Lost My Body,” “Toy Story 4,” and “How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World” earned six each.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the qualifying contenders for the Animated Feature Film Oscar this year and the category is flush with international and independently made submissions. Of course, monster hits such as pressumed frontrunner “Toy Story 4” are in the mix, but so are celebrated smaller films such as Cannes standouts “I Lost My Body” and “The Last Fiction.” This year’s nominees could surprise as a majority of the studio fare released over the past 12 months had issues inspiring critics or audiences.

At last count, there are roughly 1,532,567 animated Christmas films. Trust me, I did the math. But that isn’t stopping Netflix from releasing one more, with the upcoming “Klaus.” And if the trailer is to be believed, maybe we shouldn’t write this one off as just another Christmas children’s film.

As seen in the trailer, “Klaus” tells the story of a postman that approaches a toymaker with a proposition.
