It has been 56 years since “Planet of the Apes,” arguably one of the greatest science fiction films of all time. To see the franchise display such promising growth and evolution almost six decades later is phenomenal and deeply heartening. That’s especially so at a time when Hollywood is enduring one of its most challenging eras. The fourth installment in the franchise reboot, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” takes place 300 years after the events of 2017’s “War For The Planet of the Apes.”

At the center of this story is a young chimpanzee named Noa, played by Owen Teague, forced to make a perilous journey after his village is destroyed and his family and community are either slaughtered or abducted by the army of Kevin Durand’s megalomaniacal Proximus Caesar.

As May arrives, that means summer is here, at least for movies. And it means the theatrical rollout of tentpoles and blockbuster event films, which start out strong this year with the romantic-comedy actioner “The Fall Guy.” It’s a big month for major releases both for the bigger budgeted features but also for indie films that have gained strong word of mouth through festival selections. “I Saw the TV Glow” and “Furiosa” are both worthy of major attention, the former having garnered raves out of its Sundance premieres.

With just eleven days away from release and anticipation building for “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” 20th Century Studios has dropped one final trailer for franchise fans to feast their eyes on before the full movie hits theaters on May 10, 2024.

Directed by “Maze Runner” filmmaker Wes Ball, the film serves as a standalone sequel to 2017’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” which closed out the initial trilogy of films that began with “Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes” and was then proceeded by “Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes.” It’s the fourth installment in the reboot series and the tenth film overall.

After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film industry is still trying to find its sea legs in 2024. While the box office has been lagging, and there’s been no “Super Mario Bros,” “Barbie,” or “Oppenheimer” so far this year, to be fair, most of those hits didn’t arrive until the summer (minus the Nintendo adaptation). While it’s been a relatively slow year at the domestic box office, there have been hits in “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong,”

And, while the movie industry seemingly slowed down production last year because of said strikes, there’s absolutely no lack of content this year.

With 20th Century Studios’ “Kingdom of The Planet of The Apes” just over a month away, IMAX has released an exclusive brand new “special look” trailer for the upcoming sci-fi epic. In the latest trailer, we see humans nearly reverting to their prehistoric roots, harkening back to the original film from 1968, minus the team of time-traveling astronauts. 

Under Disney, 20th Century Studios hasn’t been releasing a vast amount of titles.

That series was originally conceived of by screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who remained exec producers on all three films, and they are back as central players in the next installment of this series, “Kingdom Of The Planet of the Apes” which takes place nearly 300 years after the events of “War For The Planet Of The Apes.”

Yes, trailers are just marketing material, and we’re not a BFD Advertising and Design class. But as any studio will tell you, a well-crafted trailer that builds hype and excitement for a movie can be a make-or-break part of the puzzle that creates much-needed anticipation and even word of mouth.  Sure, some trailers are just greatest hits of the movie, spoil or give too much away, or just a go-through-the-motions sizzle reel that can contain the moments but doesn’t turn that corner into activation: to compel that viewer to think, “Oh my god, I MUST see this movie.”

But some are artful, clever, entertaining, thrilling, and even adrenaline-pumping when they are at their best, sometimes sustaining an audience’s anticipation for a movie for months on end.  The right combination of teaser and trailer can really do it, too (or overdo it if you seem to have a desperate final trailer and or you’ve just released too many trailers, period).

The “Planet Of The Apes” trilogy reboot—two films of which were directed by Matt Reeves—was a smashing success for 20th Century Fox, the final installment of the picture, “War For The Planet Of The Apes” (2017) grossing nearly $500 million worldwide, with the second installment hitting $710 million. And Hollywood will never let a good franchise just sit idle; hence, we now have “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” arriving in 2024.
