Greek weird-wave filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos (“The Favorite”) has been working on a fast clip these days. The Oscar-winning “Poor Things” came out just last fall, and his latest film, the dark comedy “Kinds Of Kindness,” which reteams him with his Best Actress-winning “Poor Things” actress Emma Stone, premiered about six months later at the Cannes Film Festival and then was released this summer in late June.

“Kinds of Kindness” looks like another solid art house win for the increasingly prolific auteur Yorgos Lanthimos. After the Oscar-winning and box office success of “Poor Things,” his second feature in six months debuted in limited release this past weekend with the best per-screen averages of the year, a cool $70,000 in just five theaters. His third big-screen collaboration with Emma Stone so far, “Kinds” is an anthology film with three separate stories where the same actors play different roles in each chapter.

CANNES – To be perfectly honest, we didn’t expect it would be so difficult to collect our thoughts regarding Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Kinds of Kindness.” A world premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, this isn’t the first anthology film we’ve reviewed in our career, let alone one with an unconventional structure. Perhaps our hesitation is that we’re still rattled by what Lanthimos and longtime screenwriting collaborator Efthimis Filippo hope to provoke with three tales of people yearning for control and the excess of such constraints.

After the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, the film industry is still trying to find its sea legs in 2024. While the box office has been lagging, and there’s been no “Super Mario Bros,” “Barbie,” or “Oppenheimer” so far this year, to be fair, most of those hits didn’t arrive until the summer (minus the Nintendo adaptation). While it’s been a relatively slow year at the domestic box office, there have been hits in “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong,”

And, while the movie industry seemingly slowed down production last year because of said strikes, there’s absolutely no lack of content this year.
