OK, Yellowstoners, we’re catching up on the “Yellowstone” season five part two premiere, which aired late Sunday night on Paramount Network (and wasn’t readily available to watch anywhere if you didn’t catch it that evening; thankfully, Prime sorted me out). Titled “Desire Is All You Need,” episode nine of this two-part season started out a little unceremoniously.

As you all should know by now, “Yellowstone” showrunner/creator writer Taylor Sheridan and Kevin Costner, who plays the Yellowstone family ranch patriarch, John Dutton, had a major falling out nearly two years ago over scheduling and Costner wanting to take time away from the series to shoot his “Horizon: An American Saga” Western (which tanked at the box office this year despite an enormous cost and substantial personal investment by Costner).

If you’re a “Yellowstone” fan you know there’s been nothing but drama surrounding the show for nearly two years now. At the beginning in 2023, in a shocker of news, it was reported that “Yellowstone,” the most popular show on television was ending suddenly because of problems with Kevin Costnerand the series’ showrunner Taylor Sheridan. The idea at the time was Matthew McConaughey would step in for a new and related spin-off show.

Following their public fall-out and the news that its lead star would not return to the hit series, Paramount Network announced that season five of “Yellowstone” would be its last. At the same time, they announced a “Yellowstone ‘24” spin-off, and this was the show that Matthew McConaughey was rumored to star in with some of the “Yellowstone” cast members.

It’s a Gothic horror picture that seems to set itself up as ambitious and intelligent, only to succumb to the most tiresome tropes and lazy shortcuts of the genre’s lesser efforts.

More than other genres, horror fans have to deal with an inordinate amount of terrible films. The staggering amount of horror that is released, only to fall into the bottomless pit of Netflix is truly astonishing. So, it’s with some trepidation that one might approach their newest original release, “Eli.” Falling squarely into two the well-worn sub-categories of haunted hospitals and children with premonitions, director Ciarán Foy’s film is slightly scary, featuring a number of effective jump scares, but ultimately derivative rehash of other better films, until it gets to its truly go-for-broke ending, which either saves or completely destroys the film (more on that later).

It’s a shame that “Sicario” and “Hell Or High Water” screenwriter Taylor Sheridan‘s directorial debut “Wind River” was tarnished by The Weinstein Company implosion. Who knows what could’ve happened had it entered the awards race without that cloud hanging over it (even as the team behind the movie distanced themselves entirely from the distributor). Nonetheless, fans of the filmmaker going to have a whole lot more coming their way in the year ahead.
