‘Taking Woodstock’: Light & Fluffy Reefer

Ang Lee’s “Taking Woodstock” is rather benign, even toothless. It’s also quite warmer and tenderhearted than we expected and not the goofball, wacky “comedy” that the early trailers suggested — but still a lite dramedy at best.

It’s spirited and sweet, but much more innocuous than similar period, age stories, i.e., it’s no “Dazed & Confused” The warm-hearted essence to the picture does capture the soul of the peace and love generation — and that makes the picture not a total loss.

‘Taking Woodstock’ Soundtrack Features The Doors, The Dead, Janis Joplin, Due August 25

The soundtrack album for the Ang Lee movie, “Taking Woodstock,” comes out via Rhino Records on August 25.

The disc features score, composed by Danny Elfman, plus tracks by Woodstock-friendly usual suspects, Richie Havens, The Doors, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Grateful Dead, etc.

We saw the film at Cannes. It’s sweet, tender, but also, polite, congenial and in some ways, really forgettable to be completely honest. The film opens in limited release on August 28.

Cannes 09 Review: Ang Lee’s ‘Taking Woodstock’ Only Offers A Mildly Potent Buzz, But Is Warmhearted

Ang Lee has already stated that after his dark (and relatively mirthless and listless) WWII-era’d picture “Lust/Caution,” he was seeking something much more light on its feet. Enter “Taking Woodstock,” a picture about the nascent beginnings of the seminal ‘60s rock concert in Woodstock, New York that many assumed would be a drama, but turns out to be a comedy (or at least by the trailers, a fairly goofy-looking one) much to everyone’s surprise. Deadpan comedian Demetri Martin star as Elliot Tiber, a sexually-coming-of-age, aspiring Greenwich Village interior designer who became integral to pulling off the zeitgeist-shaping flower power musical festival.

New Photos, More Details: Ang Lee’s Comedy, ‘Taking Woodstock’

Ang Lee’s ’60s hippie rock-concert comedy — yes, a full-on comedy* — “Taking Woodstock” makes its world debut on Saturday, May 16 at the Cannes Film Festival.

Some new photos are out there which give us our first photo look at Eugene Levy who plays Max Yasgur, best known as the owner of the dairy farm where Woodstock took place (next to him is star of the picture, comedian Demetri Martin).

The Cannes page for the film has some new photos and some deeper details and reminds us that Danny Elfman is composing the music (which we had noted awhile ago, but had honestly forgotten).

First Look: Demetri Martin in ‘Taking Woodstock’; Ang Lee Confirms Film Is A Comedy

We’ve already seen black and white images of Emile Hirsch, the psychedelic rock-lookin’ poster and the zany looking trailer, and now Entertainment Weekly‘s summer profile has two of the first look shots of “Taking Woodstock” star Demetri Martin in action (one shot online, one shot isn’t). Both shots also include what we can safely assume are his bohemian ménage partners in the film, Paul Dano and Kelli Garner (“Thumbsucker,” “Lars and the Real Girl”).

“Taking Woodstock,” comes at the choice culminating moment: this year is the 40th anniversary of the muddy rock love-in which will also feature another documentary and yet another festival that hopefully will not tarnish its image further with mook-rock, destructive looting and excessive testosterone-fueled conflagrations.
