It’s time to get “Atypical” again Educating the public at large about the autism spectrum is an incredibly important issue, and breaking down stereotypes and promoting the reality of autism is incredibly important for improving the well being of all who are affected by the disorder. Media representations can certainly help in this regard, and shows like “Sesame Street” and, yes, “Young Sheldon” have made great strides in representing autism in a realistic way to a mainstream audience.

While “Atypical” may not be Netflix’s best show, it’s not the worst thing Netflix has ever— y’know what, scratch that. As far as I’m concerned, “Atypical” is the worst thing that Netflix has ever done (keeping firmly in mind the streaming service’s ongoing relationship with Adam Sandler, which has produced such gems as “The Do-Over” and “The Ridiculous 6.”) It’s the type of show where the Nerdy Main Character’s Hornball Best Friend says things like “I’m taking you to Poon City” and “code titties!

There’s an interesting sort of phenomenon where often the lesser hyped Netflix shows turn out to be some of their best and biggest breakout hits. In contrast to the massive hype that greeted “The Get Down” or those lukewarm Marvel shows, series like “Orange Is The New Black,” “Bojack Horseman,” “Stranger Things” and “13 Reasons Why” were mostly under the radar, but word of mouth turned them into flagship shows for the streaming service.
