As surely as the glass slipper always fits Ella’s foot, it seems we’re destined to be treated to a new take on “Cinderella“ every few years, and the latest incarnation of the Disney classic is an Amazon-distributed jukebox musical starring pop star Camila Cabello. Though “Cinderella” makes a number of attempts to update the original fairy tale through quips, female “empowerment,” and a soundtrack full of familiar tunes, this latest reimagining runs out of magic far before the clock strikes midnight.

One of last year’s surprise, break-out comedies, “Blockers,” became a box office success and kickstarted the directing career of screenwriter Kay Cannon. Now, for her latest film, she’s re-teaming with Seth Rogen for a new comedy titled, “79ers.”

According to Collider, Cannon has been signed on to direct “79ers,” which tells the story of a group of estranged friends that come together after 20 years to finish a treasure hunt they never completed when they were younger.

There are so many different ways “Blockers” could’ve gone sour. The directorial debut of screenwriter Kay Cannon (the “Pitch Perfect” movies), the bare premise of this raunchy comedy follows a gaggle of concerned parents trying to “cock block” — as the title doth (half) suggest — their teenage daughters from losing their virginities on prom night. Portrayed in the wrong light, it’s a potentially problematic, troubling idea for a comedy, one that could be easily be approached uncomfortably, clumsily and or just plain insensitively.

Starring Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, John Cena, Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Indira Viswanathan, and Gideon Adlan, and co-produced by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, this movie took five credited screenwriters (all dudes) to mash out a script about anxious parents, who are so worried about their daughters having sex, they try to stop it from it happening.
