Deadline reports that the female director returns with her first movie since 2017’s “Detroit” for an untitled Netflix feature. What’s more, Idris Elba and Rebecca Ferguson are in talks to star a trifecta no one knew they needed until now.

Well, it appears the filmmaker has a new project on deck, which will hopefully mark her return to filmmaking.

According to a report from Puck, Kathryn Bigelow is set to make a Netflix political thriller about the White House’s response to ballistic missiles being shot at the United States.

Of course, without getting into the political weeds too much, you can probably chalk up a lot of this anti-mask sentiment to the President’s vocal disapproval of masks. But regardless of how we arrived at this situation, it’s the reality we live with in the US. And in New York, the state’s leader, Governor Andrew Cuomo, is teaming with some Hollywood heavyweights to encourage people to “mask up.”

Sure, her latest, “Detroit,” might not have deserved to belong next to landmarks such as “The Hurt Locker,” and “Zero Dark Thirty,” but taken on its own merits, this was staggering and visceral filmmaking, especially its “piece-de-resistance” which is set in the Algiers Motel and feels like a poetic metaphor for the incalculable years of police brutality towards African-Americans.

However, in the decades-long history of the franchise, there has never been a woman behind the camera, but it hasn’t been for a lack of trying.

Was it a sign that the film was more “K-19: The Widowmaker” than “The Hurt Locker?”

But reviews have hit for the film ahead of its opening (look for ours in the next hour or two), and they suggest that Bigelow and writing partner Mark Boal have delivered again with their look at the 1968 Detroit Riots, and the Algiers Motel Incident that took place during them that resulted in the death of three black teenagers.

That’s the big question surrounding “Detroit,” which is forgoing any big festival premieres or key fall season release dates, to land right in the middle of summer. But the bow makes sense, giving the explosive true story at its core.

With an ensemble that includes (deep breath) John Boyega, Will Poulter, Algee Smith, Jacob Latimore, Jason Mitchell, Hannah Murray, Kaitlyn Dever, Jack Reynor, Ben O’Toole, Joseph David Jones, Ephraim Sykes, Leon Thomas III, Nathan Davis Jr., Peyton Alex Smith, Malcolm David Kelley, Gbenga Akinnabve, Chris Chalk, Jeremy Strong, Laz Alonzo, Austin Hebert, Miguel Pimentel, Kris Davis, John Krasinski and Anthony Mackie, Bigelow’s film tells the story of civil unrest that lit Detroit like a fuse.

An absolutely staggering cast including John Boyega, John Krasinski, Jason Mitchell, Anthony Mackie, Will Poulter, Jacob Latimore, Joseph David-Jones, Algee Smith, Ben O’Toole, Jack Reynor, Kaitlyn Dever, Hannah Murray, Jeremy Strong, Chris Chalk, Austin Hébert, Ephraim Sykes, Laz Alonso, Nathan Davis Jr., Malcolm David Kelley, Peyton Alex Smith and Leon Thomas III, make up the crime drama that’s set against the backdrop of Detroit’s devastating riots that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967.

In this mood of thankfulness, our thoughts tend to turn to Cannes aka Cinephile Christmas in May, as we start to wonder which of our Most Anticipated 2017 titles might show up on the Croisette. So while it’s still a way off, seeing as anticipation is almost as enjoyable as the festival itself, we’re bringing you this early list of the films we hope most will make it into the selection this year.

So we thought we’d take this opportunity to attempt a more ambitious, wide-ranging week-long feature, and one that we’ve been batting around internally for a while now — our official and definitive and unimpeachably correct (!!) ranking of the 100 currently working filmmakers we’re most excited about.

So far, John Boyega, Will Poulter, Ben O’Toole, and Jack Reynor have all signed up for the flick, and now the director has called up an old pal for his talents.

It also helps that the movies have been really, really good too. Of course, the Oscar winning “The Hurt Locker” marks the first part of this shift, with the followup “Zero Dark Thirty” confirming Bigelow’s desire to tackle stories capturing the current climate.

It took longer than it should have —the actor made a scorching debut performance in Joe Cornish’s “Attack The Block” a few years back, but subsequent projects either failed to happen or mostly disappeared. But then he was cast as Finn in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” and now millions globally have been exposed to his charm and charisma.

It would have to be an indication that HBO is getting back to the business of making some of the best television around, with top-tier talent, and credit to Bloys, he’s made it clear that the network is continuing to chase high quality television.
