It’s something of a miracle that the trailer for “Triple Frontier” is here, right in front of your eyes today. Originally a Kathryn Bigelow film, meant to be her big follow-up to the Oscar-winning “The Hurt Locker,” written by her constant collaborator, journalistic-like screenwriter and producer Mark Boal, “Triple Frontier” was a movie that started coming together in late 2010 with Johnny Depp, Tom Hanks and huge stars in the mix for Paramount Pictures.

Kathryn Bigelow was here all along. She’d directed the ‘90s pop action masterpiece “Point Break,” given us the Western horror hybrid “Near Dark” and dazzled audiences with the dystopian sci-fi film, “Strange Days.” Bigelow was a name, but it really wasn’t until “The Hurt Locker” that Bigelow became a household name with a capital A auteur that all eyes laser-focused on.

Tonight brings the British Academy of Film and Television Arts’ annual awards ceremony, one of the final events of the season, and one of the last major indicators of which way the Oscars may end up going. Kathryn Bigelow Confirmed For ‘Triple Frontier’ Director’s Chair

If there was ever any doubt it’s now been squashed. The NY Times has confirmed that Kathryn Bigelow will in fact direct the Mark Boal-scribed “Triple Frontier.”

The original announcement wasn’t clear on whether Bigelow would be helming the film, only noting that the Oscar nominee would executive produce alongside Boal and Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven, Alex Gartner and Steve Alexander. Things have seemingly been cleared up now as the NY Times reports that Boal is “writing and producing “Triple Frontier” for Paramount, with Bigelow to direct.”

The film is described as a “Traffic”-like drug parable set in the notorious border zone between Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil, where the Igazu and Parana rivers converge, making ‘la triple frontera’ difficult to monitor and a haven for organized crime.

WTF VOD: The James Cameron-Directed Bill Paxton-Lead Music Video Starring Kathryn Bigelow

Lord, this is too good not to post. You know when you think of ideas that seem great at the time, but years later are painfully embarrassing? Yikes, this is it. Essentially, this is the gist of it. Bill Paxton once had a rock band called Martini Ranch (we won’t even go there) and in 1988, James Cameron, who was still then with filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow (“Strange Days,” “The Hurt Locker,” Cameron wife number 3 of 5 running 1989–1991), directed a music video for Martini Ranch’s awesome very, ’80s-ish country-rock song, “Reach.” And of course since Cameron and Bigelow were dating, guess who played the sultry, Wild West gunslinger in the clip?

UPDATED: ‘The Hurt Locker’ Producers In Oscar Eligiblity Controversy

UPDATE: According to THR, all four producers have now been recognised by the Academy in what is being described as a “rare and extraordinary circumstance.” Chartier is again noted as being the man in question but fortunately the potential awkwardness has been averted.

When “The Hurt Locker” was announced as an Oscar Best Picture nominee on Tuesday morning, some may recall that it was announced that producing credit for the film was still to be decided.

Tarantino, Reitman, Bigelow Score DGA Nominations; Is This Your Real Oscar 5 Best Pic Frontrunners? Essentially, Yes

Well, the DGA nods are in and they are pretty much what we were expecting. Jason Reitman, who is quickly solidifying himself as a director with a feel for the pulse of contemporary, middle class America, earns a nod for “Up In The Air”. Kathryn Bigelow who is enjoying a renewed career thanks to the excellent “The Hurt Locker” (which is still criminally underseen) earns a nod. Bigelow’s ex, James Cameron, gets approval from his colleagues for his technologically ambitious and groundbreaking “Avatar.” It’s no shocker to find Quentin Tarantino in the group of nominees for his critically acclaimed and fanboy approved, “Inglourious Basterds.” The other slot goes to Lee Daniels for his hamfisted direction of “Precious,” a film that rests entirely on the shoulders of its capable cast who barely rescued the film from the depths of exploitative ghetto drama porn.

The Hollywood Reporter (via ONTD) has three short videos and the whole transcript of a director’s roundtable involving some of this year’s biggest names in directing, with Kathryn Bigelow, Quentin Tarantino, Peter Jackson, James Cameron, Jason Reitman and Lee Daniels. It’s a fascinating watch and/or read although the videos are heavily edited and on the short side.

When the directors are asked about what they would do if they weren’t directing, Tarantino took the opportunity to reiterate his threatening plans to retire at a decent age and just write.

Here’s some real evidence to signify the kind of urgent, silent, but deadly power of Kathryn Bigelow’s “The Hurt Locker,” in theaters June 26, and as we just wrote in our SXSW Preview piece, the film is fantastic.
