There was an unforeseen elegance to the first season of Netflix’s “13 Reasons Why,” which married tragic melancholy and deeply sought for moments of hope, creating a series worthy the heavy (and lengthy) discussion that would follow. Based on the book by Jay Asher (who was recently accused of harassment), it made vast improvements to a source material that relied too heavily on the mystique of the “beautiful dead girl” trope and glorified suicide — all of which was unnervingly targeted primarily to teenagers.

So far, the film about Mark Felt, the man who anonymously provided critical intel to reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein about the Watergate scandal that helped bring down Richard Nixon has been called “Felt” and “The Silent Man.” But it appears that the folks behind drama are worried about that those titles are too vague, so now they’re running with the overly explicit “Mark Felt — The Man Who Brought Down The White House,” which sounds like lead star Liam Neeson, is going to punch Nixon in the throat before the credits roll.

The movie world was probably at the feet of Tom McCarthy after “Spotlight” was the surprise winner for Best Picture at the Oscars last year, which also landed the filmmaker a statue on his shelf for Best Adapted Screenplay. But instead of leaping to another prestige project, or trying his hand at blockbuster fare, McCarthy took the unexpected route of going to Netflix, teaming with Selena Gomez (yes, really) and co-producing and directing the YA drama “13 Reasons Why.” Generally, the phrase “YA drama” would be cause for pause, but McCarthy’s involvement and the compelling teaser have us intrigued.
