We’ve seen the film about the awkward teenage girl that meets the rebellious girl that changes her life a million times before. But in “To The Stars,” the formula is mixed up a bit by transporting this coming-of-age tale to the early 1960s, where we find two young women trying to figure out how to grow up in Oklahoma in an age where females aren’t supposed to rebel.

The film stars Kara Hayward, Liana Liberato, Shea Whigham, Tony Hale, Malin Akerman, and Jordana Spiro.

Karlovy Vary – It would make perfect sense that Jaeden Martell would have a teenage girl fanbase, right?  The 16-year-old actor has made waves since he first appeared in “St. Vincent” five years ago.  Roles in “Midnight Special” and “The Book of Henry” followed but, yeah, it was 2017’s global smash “It” that likely got their attention.

The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival is known by many as a Cannes catch up fest and for its star-filled tributes, but there is a fantastic competition that takes place with films such as “Zoology” and last year’s winner, “I Do Not Care If We Go Down In History As Barbarians” recently making their debuts.  It also ends up as the defacto premiere for a number of nation’s International Film Oscar submissions (last year Israel’s “The Cakemaker,” Czech Republic’s “Winter Flies,” Belarus’ “Crystal Swan” and the aforementioned Romanian “I Do Not Care” were all Karlovy Vary premieres).

The bible belt of early 1960s rural Oklahoma wasn’t a great time and place in America for outsiders. And this god-fearing country is certainly no place for two girls that may be slowly falling in love and calling too much public attention to all the time they’re spending together. Director Martha Stephens (co-director of 2014 Sundance film “Land Ho!” with Aaron Katz) adapts Shannon Bradley-Colleary‘s screenplay on intolerance and class-warfare in pre-sexual revolution America into an artfully visual feast, but one that unfortunately plods along at an uneven pace into heavy-handedness as the drama intensifies.
