After an ambitious fourth season in 2020 that arguably drifted into something different from what Noah Hawley had produced before in his Coen Brothers-inspired “Fargo,” the fifth chapter of this twisted anthology series returns to the roots of the film that gives it a title. It’s as if Hawley and his team put some of the basic elements of the 1996 Oscar winner on a whiteboard—kidnapped housewife, pair of bumbling criminals (one foreign), car salesman husband, kindly Minnesotan police officer, etc.—and then figured out how to warp them through their funhouse mirror approach to Coen-esque black comedy.

Take Paramount+’s “The Offer,” their mini-series about making “The Godfather.”

How does a show as big as “Ted Lasso” avoid a sophomore slump? The success of the first season of the Apple TV+ hit felt incredibly tied to the pandemic as the Jason Sudeikis vehicle gave people in need of a pleasant escape the kind of diversion that the real world denied them. “I’ve had a change of heart based on a personal experience,” said Senator Rob Portman in 2013 when announcing that his own son coming out inspired a shift in his stance towards marriage equality. For the previous Congress, the Senator received a 0 from the Human Rights Campaign’s scorecard for supporting LGBTQ rights in Congress. Perhaps this is an extreme example, but it points to a larger issue. Personal exposure to marginalized communities can help humanize them, but this acceptance is not sufficient to dismantle the systems of oppression and discrimination holding them down.

Based on a true story, the new drama “Lost Transmissions” starring Simon Pegg and Juno Temple is an intimate look at human emotions and the devastating reality of treating mental illness in a system that doesn’t seem equipped to deal with it.

That said, mental illness is not an easy sell so you’ll have to forgive Gravitas Ventures for selling this film— that made its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival—as more of a movie about a young songwriter (Temple), the superficial Katy Perry-like pop singer who wants her songs (Alexandra Daddario) and the music producer friend who doesn’t think she should sell herself out like that while struggling with his own demons (Pegg).

Actor Michael Angarano may be only 31 years old, but he’s pretty much a veteran of the movie industry by now and has worked a list of terrific filmmakers.
