Following false starts with two underperforming ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ films, Sony Pictures turned to Marvel for a hand and a mutually beneficial play: Marvel producing “Spider-Man” movies and taking a financial cut in exchange for allowing the webslinger play in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Ending a box-office hit trilogy is no easy task, but there is perhaps no one better suited for the job than Kelly Marcel. Having already written two successful Venom films and the upcoming third, “Venom: The Last Dance,” Marcel is familiar with the character, which is hard to match.

It’s as if Hawley and his team put some of the basic elements of the 1996 Oscar winner on a whiteboard—kidnapped housewife, pair of bumbling criminals (one foreign), car salesman husband, kindly Minnesotan police officer, etc.—and then figured out how to warp them through their funhouse mirror approach to Coen-esque black comedy.

Now that SAG and the AMPTP have agreed to terms and the strike is over, it’s time to figure out when all those stalled productions will reach theaters. In the case of Sony‘s sequel, Variety reports that “Venom 3” will now hit theaters on November 8, 2024.

Given the show won the Emmy for Best Comedy Series in its first two outings, the creators of this game-changing hit could go a perfect 3-for-3, getting out before the show dips in quality or popularity. This might be easier said than done. “Abbott Elementary” has only grown in esteem, and there may be a push to give “Barry” the prize for its final season, premiering on HBO next month.

Take Paramount+’s “The Offer,” their mini-series about making “The Godfather.”

READ MORE: The American Dream Of ‘The Godfather’ At 50

And yes, director Francis Ford Coppola is a big part of that story, but the tale Paramount is really telling is the entire behind-the-scenes picture which in many ways centers more on the producers that helped bring it to the screen.

The film launched Coppola and Al Pacino into superstardom and revitalized Marlon Brando‘s career. Critics still herald the movie and its 1974 sequel as two of the best films of all time to this day.

Of course, there’s the endless cycle of storytelling regarding lucrative superhero, sci-fi, and fantasy properties. Still, as that feature suggests, studios have now started mining what we call “Prestige IP.” The first of this new trend, with many more in development and in the works in “The Offer,” a Paramount+ series based on making “The Godfather.” I.e., Paramount owns the rights to the still-lucrative ‘Godfather’ saga and has created a new way to continue telling ‘Godfather’ stories: by telling the tale of the legendary behind-the-scenes battle to make the movie which contains real-life characters like director Francis Ford Coppola, superproducer Robert Evans, producer Albert S.

The success of the first season of the Apple TV+ hit felt incredibly tied to the pandemic as the Jason Sudeikis vehicle gave people in need of a pleasant escape the kind of diversion that the real world denied them. Viewers fell hard for the undeniably likable title character and the ensemble of memorable characters around him, but the producers have to be wondering if those same fans will return to the pitch now that the world has started to regain its normalcy.

For the previous Congress, the Senator received a 0 from the Human Rights Campaign’s scorecard for supporting LGBTQ rights in Congress. Perhaps this is an extreme example, but it points to a larger issue. Personal exposure to marginalized communities can help humanize them, but this acceptance is not sufficient to dismantle the systems of oppression and discrimination holding them down.

That said, mental illness is not an easy sell so you’ll have to forgive Gravitas Ventures for selling this film— that made its world premiere at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival—as more of a movie about a young songwriter (Temple), the superficial Katy Perry-like pop singer who wants her songs (Alexandra Daddario) and the music producer friend who doesn’t think she should sell herself out like that while struggling with his own demons (Pegg).
