Judd Hirsch has to be on the verge of making history. The Emmy and Tony Award winner is an ensemble member of Steven Spielberg’s “The Fablemans,” a movie that is almost guaranteed to earn a Best Picture nomination next month. But it’s not his first Best Picture nominated film. In 1980 he played the therapist in Robert Redford’s “Ordinary People,” which won Oscar’s coveted prize in March, 1981. Now, 42 years later, he’s headed toward another Best Picture nominated film on his resume.

Barring some unforeseen event, acclaimed actor Brendan Gleeson should finally land an Academy Award nomination for his performance in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” And, the comeback story of the year, Ke Huy Quan, is likely to stand right beside him for his work in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.” The other three nominees in this category are honestly a coin flip.

Today is Earth Day, which means for movie studios, there’s no better time to market your hundred million dollar blockbuster that will undoubtedly create a lot of useless licensed products. That mini-rant aside, “Independence Day: Resurgence” is coming, and it looks much more serious than its predecessor.

Roland Emmerich directs once again, with Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, and Brent Spiner reprising their roles, and Liam Hemsworth, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward the newcomers in this tale that sees Earth once again battling for its survival.
