After what has felt like a shorter than usual dry spell for movies (aided greatly by the releases of “Black Panther” and “Annihilation”) we’re heading back into the swing of things. The Oscars will award who they deemed the best of the best of 2017 this upcoming weekend, but more exciting things are taking place this month. Rather than existing as dumping ground for good enough movies that studios didn’t know how to promote, March will debut new films by Wes Anderson, Ava DuVernay, Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh and more.

We’ve done just about as much coverage of the 2017 year as we can and, while we’ve already managed to hit some bumps in the one week of 2018 we’ve plowed through, we’re ready to look ahead. Over the course of the year, we’re oftentimes lucky enough to attend film festivals all over the world and, while many of the of the films covered are ones that have a trajectory of sorts throughout the current year’s slate (awards buzz), there are plenty that fall by the wayside as they await distribution, release dates and more.

When it comes to war movies, WWI doesn’t tend to get the same attention as WWII. While “Wonder Woman” marched through the trenches this summer, films set solely about the bloody war end all war have been a bit fewer and far between, but “Journey’s End” certainly makes an impression.

While it sometimes feels that you can’t move from WWII movies (this summer’s megahit “Dunkirk” first and foremost among them recently), its predecessor is more neglected in cinema on the whole. A number of great films have been made about WWI (or The Great War, as it was known at the time), including Oscar-winner “All Quiet On The Western Front,” Stanley Kubrick’s “Paths Of Glory” and Peter Weir’s “Gallipoli,” but it’s been a while since the last really notable one, beyond it serving as a slightly queasy backdrop for “Wonder Woman.”

It’s a harder conflict to make work cinematically in a lot of ways .
