Michael Caine and giant bees, and now Vanessa Hudgens. “Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2” is shaping up to be….interesting.

The Disney graduate is in final negotiations to join the sequel that Brendan Fraser was smart enough to get out of doing. With Dwayne Johnson taking over the lead role, the film will find Josh Hutcherson reprising his role from the first installment and partnering with Johnson (playing his mom’s boyfriend) as they go on a trip to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather (Caine).

Michael Caine Joins ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2,’ Will Get Chased By Giant Bees

Michael Caine is in final negotiations to join “Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2” with Dwayne Johnson and Josh Hutcherson. Maybe he will perform an inception that will make us want to see this movie.

In the film, Hutcherson will reprise his role from the first installment, “partnering with Johnson, playing his mom’s boyfriend, on a trip to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather. Caine is the grandfather, but the part is no cameo.

Dwayne Johnson Replacing Brendan Fraser In ‘Journey To Center Of The Earth 2’

Dwayne Johnson is currently in negotiations that are expected to close this week to take over the lead role from Brendan Fraser in “Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2.”

While the official line being touted is that Fraser dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, earlier this year Deadline revealed that the actor insisted on working with the original film’s director Eric Brevig on the sequel. But with New Line wanting the film ready for 2011, and Brevig readying his magnum opus “Yogi Bear” for later this year, they hired Brad Peyton (“Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”) to helm the picture instead.

Brendan Fraser Stands Up For The Artistic Integrity Of ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth 2’

In a move that no one will really care about, Brendan Fraser has taken himself out — for now — of the “Journey to the Center of the Earth” sequel.

The thespian, presumably wanting to retain the first film’s grand artistic imprint, insisted on working with that film’s director Eric Brevig on the sequel. But with Warner Bros. wanting the film ready for 2011, and Brevig readying his magnum opus “Yogi Bear” for later this year, they are looking at getting avant garde auteur Brad Peyton (“Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”) to helm the picture instead.

WB Preps ‘Clash of the Titans’ And ‘Journey To The Center Of The Earth’ Sequels, But Louis Letterier Won’t Direct ‘Clash’

When we look at future tentpoles, it sure seems like there’s a lot of franchises running out of steam (“X-Men”), finishing their main storylines (“Harry Potter”) or merely desperate to re-ignite moviegoers’ imaginations (“Pirates Of The Carribbean”). With studios realizing there are only so many trashy airport novels, TV shows and comic books to adapt, we’re about to see tentpole sequels to films we never seemed interested in at the start, with marketing left to do the heavy lifting when these re-heated leftovers hit the big screen to a collective, “Really?”

Josh Hutcherson: A ‘Spider-Man’ Contender?

So, Logan Lerman was “Spider-Man” in Marc Webb’s upcoming high school reboot of the character, according to HitFix. Except that he wasn’t, according to Deadline. Both sides seem sure of their sources, so only time will show who was right about this one, but in the meantime, another plausible candidate has appeared from IESB.

The site reports that former child star Josh Hutcherson, who appeared in the likes of “Zathura” and “Journey to the Centre of the Earth,” is on the short-list for the role.

Is this a thing now? In a week where we’ve already seen Owen Wilson taking on “Marmaduke” and Shawn Levy developing “The Berenstein Bears,” yet another CGI talking animal picture is on the way, in the form of Hanna-Barbera’s beloved “Yogi Bear”

Eric Brevig, who was behind last year’s surprisingly successful Brendan Fraser vehicle “Journey to the Center of the Earth 3-D,” is directing, from a script by Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, whose previous credits are “Surviving Christmas” and next year’s “The Tooth Fairy.” Which basically tells you everything you need to know.

No Major Press For ‘Meet Dave’ And ‘Center Of Earth 3D’? Or Does This Dreck Sell Itself?

Taking the subway home last night in New York we were sort of shocked to see posters for Eddie Murphy’s “Meet Dave” and Brendan Frasier’s new winner-fest “Journey To The Center of The Earth 3D.” Yeah we had heard of them, but according to their posters they’re releases are right around the corner (they hit theaters July 11).

Sure, we’re akin to more indie films, but check the movie blogosphere (a wretched term, we’re aware), there’s little to no chatter about each one of these films.
