These days, no IP is too good not to capitalize on, not even “Spaceballs.” Variety reports that Amazon MGM Studios has a sequel of the 1987 sci-fi spoof in development with Josh Gad set to star. Gad also leads producers on the project along with the original director, Mel Brooks. And if Brooks is involved, this idea isn’t all bad, right? After all, there are plenty of recent sci-fi tropes for a follow-up to tackle.

In compounding proof that there is truly no series that Disney won’t exploit for more content, today Disney+ announced the greenlight of  “Beauty and the Beast” (working title), a limited musical series set before the 2017 live-action film. The eight-episode prequel will star Luke Evans (“The Alienist”) and House of Mouse favorite Josh Gad (“Frozen 2”), reprising their roles as Gaston and LeFou (Louie), and introduce Briana Middleton (“The Tender Bar”) as Louie’s stepsister, Tilly.

In a move that almost no one was asking for, Disney has decided to give Josh Gad and Luke Evans a chance to revisit their “Beauty and the Beast” characters, LeFou and Gaston, respectively, for a new series on Disney+.

According to THR, Disney has brought on Gad and Evans to potentially star in a new six-episode limited musical series that will serve as a prequel to the billion-dollar-grossing live-action remake of “Beauty and the Beast.” The series comes from co-creators and co-showrunners, Josh Gad, Eddy Kitsis, and Adam Horowitz and will explore the lives of Gaston and LeFou in the time before the events of ‘Beast.’

Last year, Disney‘s “Artemis Fowl” was scheduled to hit theaters August 9, 2019.
