Another day, another rumor essentially confirmed. So, you’ll remember that in April 2022, it was reported that Adam Sandler and The Safdie Brothers (“Good Time”) were going to make a follow-up film to their critically acclaimed collaboration “Uncut Gems.” The movie, for Netflix, was supposed to shoot in the late winter of 2023 for a 2024 release. But then the WGA/SAG-AFTRA strikes happened and messed up all plans.

Fresh off their complete snub by the Academy for their film, “Uncut Gems,” the Safdie Brothers have returned with yet another project with their new leading man, Adam Sandler. But this isn’t a new feature film. Instead, the trio has collaborated on a new short film, titled “Goldman v. Silverman.” Best of all, you can watch the whole damn thing now.

In the short, Sandler plays one of the Times Square street performers, Goldman, that is just trying to earn some cash by making passersby laugh through the use of his kazoo and robotic movements.

With all the talk about “Uncut Gems” and possible Oscars recognition, many film fans might have forgotten that the Safdie Brothers were actually attached to another film before that. In fact, the film that the Safdies were signed on to develop is none other than a remake of the popular ‘80s buddy cop comedy, “48 Hrs.”

But according to a new interview with MovieWeb, the Safdies explained why they’re not working on that film anymore and how that experience taught them to stick with originals…for now.

In a year that actually includes the release of Todd Phillips’ film, “Joker,” an argument can be made that the most Martin Scorsese-esque film to hit theaters in 2019 is actually “Uncut Gems.” Where “Joker” seems to hold Scorsese’s previous works like “Taxi Driver” on a pedestal to be worshipped, the Safdie Brothers’ latest thriller feels more in line with something the iconic filmmaker would make if he was just now coming up in the industry.

Choices were certainly made as the New York Film Critics Circle determined their year-end awards bestowing Best Film to Netflix’s “The Irishman.” The Martin Scorsese drama took the same honor from the National Board of Review just one day earlier.  In a slight surprise, Best Director went to brothers Benny and Josh Safdie for A24’s “Uncut Gems.”  

Antonio Banderas and Lupita Nyong’o landed much needed Oscar assists taking Best Actor for Sony Picture Classics’ “Pain & Glory” and Best Actress for  Universal Pictures’ “Us,” respectively.
