Hell, he’s basically the personal videographer for Haim. And while his videos for that band typically are fun, vibrant, and a little silly sometimes, he’s bringing a whole new vibe for his most recent music video, The Smile’s “Wall of Eyes.”

(The full release isn’t until December 25, but I digress.) However, it appears we now have more details on what songs will accompany the feature as part of the period film’s ‘70s soundtrack.

Such is certainly the case with Pablo Larrain‘s “Spencer.” The Kristen Stewart-led Princess Diana biopic has won hearts during each of its festival appearances; throw in a beloved composer like Jonny Greenwood and it’s no surprise that even the soundtrack is enough to generate buzz in certain circles.

Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the cruel and fiercely repressed rancher Phil Burbank, it gracefully lays bare the emotion and agony of those living alongside him on a Montana cattle ranch in the 1920s. Through his fraught relationships with brother George (Jesse Plemons), his new wife Rose (Kirsten Dunst), and her delicate son Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), Campion’s story builds in force until it accrues the grand, gratifying weight of a Greek tragedy.

“I see this film as a departure from my other films, but it’s perhaps a nice bookend to ‘The Piano,’ which is from the feminine perspective,” said Campion during a Friday NYFF press conference in New York.

If you’re Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larraín, known for “Jackie” and “Neruda,” you get such a privilege, and or the stars just seem to align that way because of the pandemic. Earlier this summer, AppleTV+ released the adaption of Stephen King’s “Lisey’s Story,” which Larrain directed and then in August, his last feature, “Ema” co-starring Gael Garcia Bernal, was finally released theatrically in the U.S.

While Bronco is long gone and never seen on the screen, his spirit is felt everywhere in this soulful exploration of masculinity and repressed love, one that is equal parts untamed and delicate and wholly gorgeous.

Just a couple weeks ago, it was revealed that the filmmaker helmed a short commercial for the new Google Pixel 3 smartphone. However, the most recent directorial effort from Malick is something completely different and will allow viewers to experience something unlike anything else.

The guitar maestro, most recently known for composing the scores for “You Were Never Really Here” and “Phantom Thread,” the latter of which earned him an Oscar nom, will now be bringing his iconic music to the New York Philharmonic.

Listen: Jonny Greenwood’s Score To Lynne Ramsay’s ‘You Were Never Really Here’

As part of their Art of the Score series, the NY Philharmonic will be screening Paul Thomas Anderson’s “There Will Be Blood” with a live orchestra performing Greenwood’s score on September 12th and 13th at Lincoln Center’s David Geffen Hall.

While ostensibly a tug of war in a relationship cursed by control, PTA’s “Phantom Thread” is a threefold character study.

Audiences see Alma, Reynolds, and Cyril grow, confront one another, and fall prey to manipulative behavior, only to have the tables turned.

After a string of successful pairings with Paul Thomas Anderson, the musician is back at work with another collaborator, Lynne Ramsay, for her next film, “You Were Never Really Here.”

Oftentimes, these interviews are very surface-level and don’t really shed much light on the films. Recently, on the Adam Buxton Podcast, “Phantom Thread” was featured in two (well, technically one-and-a-half) episodes, and they’re well worth a listen.

First, Buxton welcomed Jonny Greenwood for a quick chat.

Oscar contenders are expanding into more theaters at this time of year, and one movie you cannot miss on the big screen is Paul Thomas Anderson‘s “Phantom Thread.” The big draw, of course, is the double whammy of a new film from PTA and Daniel Day-Lewis‘ final performance.

“I’ve always thought of doing a musical, but.. maybe one day. They’re fashionable right now, aren’t they?” he told us in a recent interview. Well, the director’s latest, “Phantom Thread,” may not feature any song and dance numbers, but it’s filled to near overflowing with music by Jonny Greenwood.

Just like “Present Tense,” this was shot live in Tarzana, California, with Thom Yorke, Jonny Greenwood and a Roland CR-78 jamming out the tune.

Well, here we are now, so quit your bellyaching. Of course, eagle-eyed observers may smell a rat: why was our Best Soundtracks list only 25 strong while this is one is twice as long? Well, simply put, as much as we appreciate the fine art of curation and understand how much a well-chosen pre-existing track can enhance the experience of a film and open up new avenues of music for us to explore, the even finer art of scoring —that is, creating music specifically tailored to the rhythms and cues of the film in question— is closer to our hearts.
